GearGrit has me reminiscing about the big three ps2 franchises. You were either a Jak and Daxter guy, a Ratchet and Clank guy, or a Sly Cooper guy. It’s possible you dipped your toes into one of the other ones, but there was usually one franchise you were more passionate about.

So which one was yours?

Jak and Daxter

I am too young to have played them

I was never interested in either franchise

There's a few games that I think people aren't too aware of and should definitely peep. They're the closest and most identical games we have to others like jak and ratchet. There isn't one for sly cooper but I'm sure there'll be one or two at some point.

So, a few of the games in a row:

Skylar & Plux: Adventure On Clover Island

Geargrit

Akimbot

While skylar and plux/geargrit are both shockingly similar to jak 1 & 2, akimbot doesn't outright scream ratchet and clank but it's the closest thing we have to that series. I've played all 3 and I'd have to say that they're worth looking into.

As far as I know, skylar and plux was a prototype for a bigger game which explains why it's pretty short. It has somewhat of the same atmosphere and landscape detail that you'd find in jak 1 along with a little of the same mechanics.

Geargrit, as it's still being developed at this moment, is probably the jak 2 of this age. Same gritty tone but less of an open world game. It has GTA aspects whereas you can steal vehicles and kill civilians. It'll have newer elements that you wouldn't really find in jak 2. Things like a kick that'll launch you upwards or forward, a more developed combat system and a ultimate(not exactly a dark form trigger like jak, just a stronger attack).

akimbot, while being a much lesser ratchet and clank, is still worth checking out. in my opinion, it's pretty ok. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of it but I still want to recommend it regardless because there aren't many devs out there who're making similar games close to ratchet.

geargrit and akimbot are on steam but skylar and plux is unfortunately delisted. It's still playable tho, you can find it on the archive.

Drew Tansy, the main character of the game GearGrit, in development by Weston_Mitchell! I never played a PS2-era 3d platformer, but I'll be checking this one out when it releases.

So I’ve decided in addition to my self imposed drawing challenge “100 games of Steam 2025” that once a week I’ll do a “Upcoming Steam games I’m looking forward to” drawing, this’ll be until the end of 2025 which there’s a total of 7 drawings for this.

I won’t go into detail why I’ve chosen each game as again I would rather people make up their own minds about each one.

I updated this each Sunday until the end of 2025.

Whatever Wednesday: Tansy

Character: Tansy Geargrit

Request was for Tansy giving a POV paizuri.

It's Steam's next fest where you can check out demos for future games, and GearGrit is REALLY promising! It's a PS2-style 3D platformer a la Jak II; I love the vibes and it looks very pretty visually (and so does Tansy. Like a great job on that character design). The movement system is fantastic also, there are so many little tricks to it that if mastered allow you to really speed across the world.

I've been playing a lot of demos but this is the one I just want more of. Very much looking forward to this game!
