So I grew up a total geek, we are talking watching dad and his friends playing magic once a week, skipping school so we could see Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, Spiderman, Iron Man, ect on opening day, comic books, so many comic books, visits to the local game shops/comic stores at least once a month***, Dungeons and Dragons books on the shelf in the living room, trips to the WB store for awesome geek merch, essentially living in a buffy the vampire slayer XXL tshirt that looked like a dress on my 4’ 11" volleyball player figure, playing the orginal kingdom hearts game for 2 weeks straight and not sleeping (my mom then banned storyline games while school was in session), and best of all memories of being a toddler and having dad read the illustrated Hobbit as your bedtime story.
Now fast forward to age 20, Im a young intorvert, recently diagnosed bipolar, with severe crippling anxiety, geek culture still isnt ‘cool’ so I am an outsider and only let my geek flag fly around family. Its around Valentine’s Day and eharmony is doing there free communication week or whatever, and I am like sure let’s see if I can find someone who can handle my ‘quirks’.
On the 13th I get a novella length introduction email from my now husband. We date for 3 years and marry. I introduce him to a crazy amount of fandoms in that time but he would laugh and say he was the bigger geek.
And this is when I shoved his smirk “i am the bigger geek” crap in his face because I just sort of let it be until I could off handily say something to which he would finally concede his crown on his own, haha.
During our almost 7 years together the geek culture has grown and our to watch list is pages long. We start watch The Flash tv show. I grew up with Flash, Justice League, Batman/The Dark Knight, Marvel everything, ect…now let me tell you the moment they find present time Barry’s DNA in the past and my husband is like FREAKING OUT, smacking my arm like “did you hear that, did you f***ing see that”. Im like “ya” he can’t understand why Im not Freaking Geeking out.

I very calmly turn and go “I know, C-O-MICS…BTW there are parallel universes too.”
The look on his face = priceless

He in all seriousness sticks up his hands and goes “you win, you are a bigger geek”

We now have a one year old that has made me have to use the #GeekMomProblem, but more on that another day ;)
***(note this was back when the geeks in the back would start sweating and pull out their inhalers cuz I, a young lady, was in the shop. It was always kind of a thrill actually cuz some would just watch the whole time my dad and I were in the store. The best reaction ever had to be whenever I would find something completely epically awesome and ask my dad for it, I actually witnessed the store owner smack a D&D player mid sentence because the D&D guy wanted to come, no “needed” to talk to me…his words.)
