The Kings Speech.
A suprisngly human story Kings Speech is odd. For a movie about the Royalty of England you sure don't get that. The shots are mainly medium and close shots that don't really show off the regalty and pomp that would go along with being royalty. Close ups of people talking also prove to be surprisingly beautiful. This movie isn't really a movie about a King who can't speak but more about a man who happens to be king and has to give a speech. That said the plot resolves around the at the time Duke of York second Son to King George V slowly having to except his responsibility as royalty. There is some good family drama and intrigue as well and interesting looks at tradition versus what you want. The acting makes this movie what it is though. It is the centerpiece of this film. Colin Firth is really good as the Stammering Duke, managing to not be overly annoying with his stammer and endearing. Geoffry Rush also is excellent showing why he has had such praise given to him and kind of making up for uttering the line "Ninjas.Damn". The supporting cast is also great, Helena Bonham Carter pulls it back and works as the future queen of England. Guy Pierce as the older greater and severely flawed older brother makes a good foil to Firth. Michael Gambon also shows up as King George V in a nice supporting role that was a welcome surprise. Timothy Spall also shows up as a scene chewing Churchill that is rather funny actually. This movie also has some good humor in it. Who knew hearing someone scream and shout obscenities was so funny. Ultimately this movie is uplifting and a great film to watch. Its a little slow but its a period piece about Royalty what film isn't slow when dealing with these people? Its uplifting without being annoying and heavy handed about it which is nice. I can see why this is considered a front runner to many Best Picture noms.
