Gem could hear someone walking up behind her as she stood against the fence. Solid footfalls, confident stride, the slight swish of a dress. Pearl. She didn’t have to turn to confirm what she already knew, as Pearl wrapped her arms around her with practiced ease, leaning her chin against the top of Gem’s head. Show off. “No hat?” She could hear her smugness, “Have you finally accepted that you’re short?” She can feel her face go warm. In rage. Not embarrassment. And maybe slightly because of how close she is.
