CAMILLE  SLOWLY  LOOKED  UP  FROM  THE  BOOK  IN  HER  LAP. Its  spine  had  been  softened  from  years  of  handling,  its  pages  crowded  with  looping  script  and  ink-smudged  margins.  They  were  sitting  in  her  apartment  and  her  record  played  faintly  in  the  background,  something  slow  and  low,  barely  there  beneath  the  hum  of  old  pipes  and  the  occasional  creak  from  the  floorboards  below.

“ I  think  I  always  felt  it ”,  she  said  eventually,  thumb  brushing  over  the  edge  of  the  page,  “ but  I  didn’t  know  until  this  summer.  The  veil’s  always  been  thin  around  me  .  .  .  objects  reacting  when  they  shouldn’t,  feelings  that  didn’t  belong  to  me.  I  used  to  call  it  a  gut  instinct,  but  it  wasn’t  that.  Not  really,  I  knew  that ” 

She  leaned  back,  head  resting  against  the  worn  cushion,  the  ceiling  fan  spinning  lazy  circles  above  her.  Her  voice  stayed  calm,  but  there  was  something  reverent  in  the  way  she  spoke,  like  she  was  telling  a  secret  not  just  to  Genevieve,  but  to  herself  again.

“ It  started  with  a  pendant  I  found  in  an  unmarked  box.  It  was  silver,  old  and  humming  like  it  had  a  heartbeat.  When  I  touched  it,  it  was  like  something  clicked.  Like  I’d  been  walking  around  with  the  lights  off  my  whole  life  and  didn’t  realize  it  until  something  flipped  the  switch ”,  Camille’s  lips  curved  into  a  soft  smile,  “ I  didn’t  tell  anyone, of course.  Not  out  of  shame  or  fear,  just  .  .  .  .  I  wanted  to  keep  it  mine  for  a  little  while.  Let  it  settle.  Let  me  settle ”

Her  fingers  toyed  with  the  hem  of  her  sleeve,  fidgeting  in  that  absent-minded  way  she  always  did  when  something  mattered  more  than  she  was  letting  on.

“ I  still  don’t  know  what  I  am.  Not  fully.  I  mean  -  witch,  sure.  But  the  lines  are  messy.  The  magic’s  different.  Like  I  wasn’t  supposed  to  be able to do this stuf,  but  I am  anyway ”  She  looked  over  then,  eyes  catching  Genevieve’s  with  something  steady  and  sure.

“ Did you know right away? What you are and how to deal with all of . . . this? ”
