Gemma Robinson, Artist Statement
My work is really a return to primitive, abstract painting through an exploration of paint, surface, colour and shape. Through what are carefully considered shape and colour combinations I aim to create a kind of discourse between the geometric and (more recently) the organic. Its about creating a stunning visual effect.
My purpose is to achieve the totally abstract- a contradiction between organic shape and composition versus a clean, mechanised and ‘geometric’ application. I like to pay particular focus though to the materiality of the paint; through application, layering and surface variety.
In the future I’d like to take my work in the direction of installation; and also to further experiment with the concept of shaped canvas.
