She Will be Loved: Chapter 46 Update

I woke up late.

It was Saturday but the foggy feeling of too much sleep made it hard to be happy for the weekend. There were a couple texts waiting for me and I managed to check that I wasn’t in mortal danger before chucking the phone into the blankets without answering. They were mostly small talk from my basketball friends teasing me for ditching the day before.

As I walked down the stairs I wondered if they felt anything like I felt about my sister. Or did they know it had been the ‘accident’ after the spring dance last year that had thinned me out? I’d talked things out with Jacob even before he knew the truth but I’d been pulling away from them, from things I’d found fun. I thought they understood though-- after all...

Edward shook his head, more desperate than ever. "I need to see Bella."

My mouth opened and shut several times. Before I could find anything to say, another voice cut into the conversation.

"You need to leave.”

“Jake.” I breathed a sigh of relief as I heard his human voice. Giving up on sense of my brain screaming for me to run away from both of them, I took a deep breath and sprinted through what little space there was between Edward and the door.  I  threw my arms around him and he pulled me to his bare chest in a one armed hug, turning our bodies so that he was between the vampire and me.

I saw Paul first, kneeling over an unidentifiable mass of some bedraggled thing washed up by the waves. He was moving oddly, pushing at the thing as though he were… almost as if it was… I took several quick steps closer to the beach and then I broke into as quick of a walk as I could without tripping over the tangled brush and stones. It was a few steps further that I saw what he was doing.

That he was doing CPR.

That the mass of sodden clothes and seaweed was my sister.

I held in a scream, telling myself not to distract him, but as soon as I hit the sand I was sprinting and stumbling and falling and breaking my fall on pebbles and shells. Jacob tried to help me up but I was too frantic to really notice what he was doing and I fought my way to my sister’s side; I was bleeding but Isabella was right there and I needed to know…

I arrived coughing and holding my right hand against my body, trying to staunch the bit of blood. Paul looked up momentarily to glare furiously at me, I turned to ask Jake for help but he just looked back with desperate apology in his eyes.

Isabella….? Is she… Is my sister dead? Is it my fault?

Happy birthday, Jake

 I tossed him the bag and looked up expectantly as he opened it, staring down at his gift... 

"Like it?"

“Um…” Jacob stuck his head into the mouth of the bag, trying to see clearly. “Is that a roll of scotch tape?”

I nodded proudly. “It was on sale.”

"Gen..."

 "Gen, you idiot."

And he laughed at me.
