Coco genderbent ideas:
Only Hector and Imelda are gnederbent at this point.
Fem!Hector is Herminia and M!Imelda is Ignacio.
Fem!Hector is still best friends with Ernesto, since they grew up together. However, since machismo is very much a thing, Ernesto has less qualms about taking advantage of his more talented partner. Similarly, Fem!Hector does not expect to receive all the credit she deserves, and is pretty much satisfied with projecting herself onto Ernesto. He has the looks and charisma befetting of a star. If the world got to hear her song through him, that would be enough.
Performing in the streets alongside Ernesto has its benefits – if any man makes a move towards Herminia, her companion shields her from the unwanted attention. If she were to sing or play guitar in public without a male "relative", who knows what could happen. Ernesto makes sure Herminia is aware of the fact, convincing her she needs his protection as much as he needs her songs.
Also, Ernesto has Herminia cook his food and wash his clothes. She doesn't have a problem with that – he is the closest thing she has to a family and cares about him very much.
The two of them refer to each other as brother and sister – partly because they consider each other as such, partly to avoid gossip (or limit Ernesto's chances at scoring with the beautifull senoritas).
But then the day comes a certain Ignacio becomes infatuated with Herminia. Being a proper Christian boy, he worries that performing in the streets may not be good for her reputation, and advises Ernesto to take better care of his sister. Ernesto says he knows what he's doing and pays him no heed.
Sometime later, Ignacio gathers the courage to ask Herminia if Ernesto is treating her well. She says sure, he doesn't beat her up or keep her locked up at home, so she considers herself pretty lucky. Ignacio brings up Christian values and expresses concern for Herminia's future. Herminia becomes upset. Nobody's forcing her to play, she does it because she loves music, but surely Ignacio doesn't think a woman could have an agency outside of as relationship with a man, so she shouldn't be wasting her time on him. Thorougly impressed, Ignacio takes his leave.
Some time passes. Ignacio's common sense is telling him to stay away from Herminia, but he cannot help being drawn to her. He is intrigued. He tells himself he has to provide her with moral support, but it's only an excuse to get to know her better.
Herminia is not interested in romance. Ernesto often tells her that he's the only man she needs in her life – a man who loves her like a sister, and therefore will never abuse her. If she ever got married, she'd be her husband's property, and all her dreams will end. Honestly, men can be charming, but only until they get under a woman's skirt – then they drop the act and the magic is gone. Herminia bealieves all of this, and so she's wary of potential suitors.
But then, Ignacio seems genuinely interested in her. He does not try to touch her. He does not belittle her. He says it's not blind obedience he expects from his future wife, but obedience born of genuine respect. For wives should submitt to their husband, but the husbands should love their wives as the Christ loves the Church. Herminia still doesn't trust him, but is intrigued enough to keep seeing him. No harm will come from discussing their worldviews, she decides.
Ignacio comes to the conclusion that Herminia's music is not a bad thing. She is the happiest when she plays, and she's good at it. Also, that's when she's the most beautiful.
Herminia comes to the conclusion that Ignacio may be one of the few genuinely good men out there. That, or he's an extremely good actor. Ernesto insists it's the latter – he is starting to fear his sister may ditch him to start a fmaily, and he needs her songs to be famous.
More may come later. I'm running out of time.
