Here, have the team reacting to genderfluid!lance.
@genderfluid-alien here’s a followup for the genderfluid prompt!
Keith sat in the dining room, shortly after finding Lance.
Shortly after he found out that Lance was genderfluid.
The team had questioned him when he arrived back in the kitchen, no Lance at his side. “He’ll be here soon,” Keith explained, guilt piercing his gut as he used the pronoun, “he’s just getting ready.”
Keith stopped himself in calling Lance ‘she. It hurt. He wanted to let Lance know they were loved, that he loved them.
But Keith couldn’t. Not yet.
And more importantly, how would the team react? Keith didn’t know why he said the team was accepting. He didn’t know, really. It wasn’t certain.
But the paladins were good people. Surely, they would come around?
Keith hoped so, especially when Lance awkwardly walked in, wearing a sky blue skirt and a white t-shirt, tucked in.
Oh, Keith hoped they would be okay with it.
Lance shot Keith a tiny smile, a slight lip curl.
She smiled even wider when Keith subtly gave her a thumbs up.
Maybe it would be okay, Lance thought.
She turned to the gawking team and confused alteans. She gave a slight wave, her pink necklace bouncing where it sat on top of her shirt.
Lance had done her own makeup, but it was simply. No popping eyeshadow or eyeliner, light mascara, light concealer. She didn’t want to go all out yet.
And yet, the team stared. Jaws dropped. Eyes wide.
“Hi, guys.” Lance said quietly, her voice a little higher. Lance had taken vocal classes, to train themselves in range so they could fit their voice with what they felt that day.
Pidge was the first to speak, adjusting her glasses. “Uh, what is this, Lance?”
“What is what?” She spoke, still quiet. But she had a teasing tone.
Pidge waved her arms at 'him’. “This. Arent you, like, a boy?”
“Seriously, Lance? This isn’t the type for jokes.”
“Oh, that looks wonderful on you!”
Allura and Shiro spoke at the same time, Shiro sounding annoyed, Allura sounding excited.
They looked at eachother, their words contradicting eachother’s.
“Well,” Lance said, “I’ve decided that today is as good as any day to come out.”
The team stared, all except Keith and Pidge.
Keith already knew, of course. Pidge seemed to understand, so she simply pushed her glasses farther up her nose and shrugged.
“Oh, cool. You look good today, then.” Pidge said, her voice matter-of-fact, daring the other paladins to challenge her.
Hunk was the first to snap out of it.
“Oh, yeah, I agree with Pidge. Very pretty. I like the skirt color, too. It brings out your eyes.” Hunk grinned at his best friend.
Lance smiled at Hunk, arms behind her back. She was making herself appear smaller, Hunk could tell in her body language.
Keith smiled at Lance. “Nice outfit choice.” Was all he said, his eyes soft and gentle, welcoming.
“Genderfluid?” Allura and Coran both spoke, confused.
“It means I switch what I identify as most days.” Lance explained. “Just so you know, I have a white necklace for non-binary, pink for female and blue for male. Obviously, I’m female today.”
Allura walked to Lance, hesitantly tracing her fingers over the necklace. “Oh! I have old dresses and other clothes that you could have, if you’d like”. Allura beamed.
Coran sauntered to Lance next. “My.. Lance? Well. Lance, I accept you for who you are. I’m proud of you for telling us.” Coran spoke, giving Lance a quick hug.
Lance’s eyes landed on Shiro, who had not yet stood.
She uncomfortably shifted. “Shiro, I hope you accept me and agree to use proper pronouns, even if you dont like it.”
“What?” Shiro squawked. “Oh, no! Nononono! Im just, surprised. Uh..” Shiro shifted.
“Well, Im trans, so it just surprised me that there’s another someone who identifies as a different gender than what they were born with.” He gave an awkward smile, finally standing and walking to Lance.
Yeah, maybe it was going to be okay.
