Hi! I’m meeting with a friend I haven’t seen a long time for coffee. What are some good scripts or questions to ask to keep the convo going?
I would suggest looking in the #general conversation tag. It has some good stuff. Remember it’s best to stick to open ended questions, this will be really helpful in keeping a natural flow to your dialogue.
So start with a simple and general question, like: “What have you been up to lately?” How’s work going?” “Are you still studying illustration? Are you liking it?” and then build on it. Here's an example:
You: “I haven’t seen you in so long! What have you been up to?”
Them: “I’ve been really busy. My school is going well and I’ve been very happy. I had to change jobs last month though.”
You: “Really? Do you like what you’re doing now?”
For a better explanation of this conversation style I did a post recently about open ended questions. I think that could be pretty helpful here.
Also, if you can remember something that you talked about last time you saw each other ask follow up questions. ie. “How did that project with jon turn out?” “have you finished that painting you were working on?” And let the topics flow from there. I’m also going to add a list of general starters here:
“Are you liking school?” “Have you picked up any new hobbies?” “Did you go anywhere interesting since I last saw you?” “Have you seen a good movie or show recently? What was it about?
“Have you ever been to *place you think they might like*? ie. A park or coffee shop. Thell them a bit about it. Suggest you go sometime. “How has *name of friend/child/SO* been?” “Are you enjoying the snow?” “Did you see the recent sports match?”
Current events can also be great topics if you feel comfortable and don’t think it’s going to cause conflict. Just stick to open ended questions and don’t put to much pressure on yourself. It will all be fine, good luck!
