A review by KREET-N
This series dropped yesterday and I watched it.
There were some immensely common aspects to the stories that are so obvious they do not require comment, however...
The over all theme as stated : get rich or lie trying...is perhaps a little off.
I felt like it was telling me to “stay in your lane”.
Although it was well produced, expertly edited, and compelling to watch, the feeling I had was empty and sad for each of the subjects. Their “victims” stories did not gain my sympathy, as I generally distrust all people and think I wouldn’t be taken in by “scams” such as these.
The Ponzi schemes were almost entirely accidental that began as genuine business ideas and met with the unwillingness to admit failure at some point.
Those who were posing as other people or faking it generally weren’t causing as much damage as they could have and their motivations seemed to all be rooted in alienation and sadness.
The last episode of the kid scamming on the internet and rapping about it was the saddest of them all. He was the youngest, and most successful. Meaning that he profited the most without being reprimanded or arrested.
The dishonesty:
Each of the subjects chose a path that was purposefully dishonest. Each of them benefited financially in some way. Some more than others, but all had a drive to make themselves into something else and escape the lives they were living previously.
Identity is a Venereal Disease
The examples were just a taste of what’s become of our culture. These individuals were trying to cure their illnesses with money and status, or just escape from one situation to the next. It is hard for me to judge them, and part of me wants to forgive them entirely. I don’t judge them or forgive them. I remain removed, as always, my moral code is still evolving. I have encountered many opportunities to do these kinds of things to people in my life and I always chose poverty. Whether out of virtue or of cowardice I do not think it matters.
In the end I feel my hypothesis about the world is supported further by this series.
That the world is hell. We are innocent souls born into it and we are either tortured by it or become torturers.
Ultimately we are all fated to die which makes the truth of our modern world so tragic, we turn on each other, quickly and without remorse. Sometimes it’s for little more than a meal and most often it’s just a stack of paper that does the trick.
The world is wicked. And we too are wicked.
Choose your path and guard yourself. Trust no one.
