Aketza, 30, from Madrid, now in Berlin

“Madrid habe ich nicht aus politischen oder pädagogischen Gründen verlassen. Ich bin abgehauen, weil ich noch nie wo anders gelebt habe und ich dachte, Berlin könnte gut passen. Und ich hatte Recht. Die Stadt bietet eine Menge: Sie ist bezahlbar und du kannst dich überall auf ein Fahrrad schwingen.

Die Leute sind in Madrid eher einladend am Anfang. Und die deutsche Direkt-ins-Gesicht Mentalität war eine große Herausforderung für mich. Außerdem habe ich gelernt, dass man die Sprache des Landes sprechen muss, in dem man integriert leben möchte. Ich habe mich geschämt, kein deutsch zu sprechen. Das wurde zu einem echten Handicap, man kann sich nicht voll ausleben und keinen Job finden, wenn man sich nicht ausdrücken kann. Ich wollte das ändern.

Jetzt wo ich deutsch kann, gehe ich anders auf Menschen zu und entdecke die Einzigartigkeit Berlins.”

“I didn’t leave Madrid for political or education reasons, I left because I had never lived abroad and I thought Berlin would be a good experience. Turns out, I was right – the city itself has so much to offer. It is affordable and you can get anywhere one a bike.

In Madrid, people are more inviting at first, so getting used to the German straight-in-your-face mentality and efficiency was a slight challenge. Aside from that, though, I learned that to be 100 percent integrated, you have to learn the language of the country you’re in. Otherwise, it becomes a handicap. Not being able to speak makes it harder to find a job and live a full life. I reached a point where I was ashamed of not speaking German, so I made a change.

After learning the language, it became much easier to meet people and get to know different places around the city. I realized how unique Berlin really is.”

Dario, 34, from Sicily, now in Saulheim near Mainz

“In Italien habe ich als Sales Manager gearbeitet, die Firma ist pleite gegangen während der Krise. Danach habe ich einige Zeit schwarz für einen Sub-Unternehmer eines Öl-Konzerns gearbeitet. Ich habe für eine 60 Stunden Woche zuletzt 900 Euro bekommen, besser als zu Hause zu bleiben, dachte ich. Der Öl-Konzern wusste alles, hat aber die Augen zugemacht. Italienische Verhältnisse eben.

Ich habe Frau und zwei Kinder – mein Sohn ist autistisch und wir haben in Italien für ihn kaum Unterstützung gefunden, Behandlungen sind sehr teuer. Also habe ich mir in 2013 gedacht, ich fahre wieder nach Deutschland, wo ich vor 12 Jahren schon einmal gearbeitet habe. Angefangen habe ich als Leiharbeiter in einer Firma mit 1500 Beschäftigten. Leiharbeit ist wie ein Sklavenverhältnis, aber immer noch besser als die Arbeit in Italien. Ich verdiene jetzt mehr, habe mittlerweile mein Diplom anerkannt bekommen und bewerbe mich als Facharbeiter. Meine Familie ist 2014 nachgezogen, wir haben ein Haus gefunden und mein Sohn kann in einen integrativen Kindergarten gehen. Das Leben in Deutschland ist viel besser.”

“In Italy I worked as a sales manager, but the company went bankrupt during the financial crisis. After that I spent some time unofficially working for the sub-contractor of an oil company. I worked 60 hours a week and received 900 Euro, so I thought it was better than staying at home. The oil company knew everything, but turned a blind eye in the typical Italian fashion.

I have a wife and two kids – my son is autistic and we have found little support for him in Italy because treatments are very expensive. So, in 2013 I thought I would go back to Germany where I worked before, 12 years ago. I began as a temporary worker at a company that had 1,500 employees. Temporary work is a slave-like relationship, but still better than working in Italy. I earn more now, and I got my diploma in order to apply as a skilled worker. My family followed me here in 2014, we found a house and my son can go to an inclusive kindergarten. Life in Germany is much better.”

Luis, 25, from Spain, now in Berlin

“Ich bin nach Deutschland gezogen, weil ich dort machen kann, was ich will.

Hier fühle ich mich gut, aber das war nicht immer so. Neben der Sprache musste ich mich an eine andere schwierige Sache anpassen: Das Recycling. Hier muss man Papier, Plastik und Hausmüll trennen. Diese kulturelle Differenz hat mich ernsthaft über den gesellschaftlichen Einfluss auf die Umwelt nachdenken lassen.

Natürlich gibt es Sachen, die ich an Spanien vermisse. Da gibt es immer Partys und eine Menge Feiertage. Im Sommer bringen viele Feste die Menschen zusammen, diese Gemeinsamkeiten fehlen mir in Deutschland, denn hier kommen Freizeit und Feiern nicht so häufig vor.

Aber auch in Spanien kann man sich einsam fühlen. In Deutschland hingegen kommt man sehr viel mit Menschen verschiedener Kulturen und Länder in Kontakt, so erfährt man immer etwas über andere Kulturen. Deutschland ist wie eine Plattform für mich geworden, um mit dem europäischen Rest zu kommunizieren.”

“I moved from Spain to Germany because in Germany I can do whatever I want. 

I feel very comfortable here now...but it wasn’t always so easy. The most difficult adjustments I had to make when I moved here were first, the language, and second, the recycling. Here you must separate paper, plastic and everything. This difference between cultures made me really think about society’s impact on our world.

Of course there are things I miss about Spain. There, everyone celebrates all the time and there are many free days. In the summer there are a lot of celebrations that bring society together for a common cause. I miss the social culture in Spain because in Germany, free days and celebrations don’t happen so often.

But also in Spain, one can feel isolated. In Germany people from different cultures and countries are so accessible that it is impossible not to learn new things. Germany has become a kind of platform for me to communicate with the rest of Europe.”

Rita, from Portugal, now in Berlin

“Drei Jahre bevor ich nach Berlin gekommen bin, zog ich nach Lissabon, um zu arbeiten. In Lissabon hatte ich keinen festen Job und war nur als Freelancer tätig. Ich hatte keine Lust, weiter herumzujobben. Dann habe ich mich für einen Arbeitsplatz in Berlin beworben und einfach gedacht: "okay, ich versuch’s". Die haben plötzlich "Ja!" gesagt, so musste ich umziehen. Ich hatte nicht wirklich das Vorhaben, aus eigenem Antrieb umzuziehen, aber nach dem Angebot ging irgendwie alles sehr schnell. Jetzt arbeite ich als Webdesigner.

Ich mag die Freiheit und die Kultur in Berlin. Und die Idee, dass wir eine neue, unbekannte Kultur zu beschreiten. Ich mag das Gefühl, Menschen zu treffen, die nicht von hier sind - bei der Arbeit oder einfach nur in der U-Bahn. Auch wenn viele Leute sagen, dass Berlin nicht Deutschland ist, sind Sprache und Kultur manchmal eine Herausforderung für mich. Jedenfalls habe ich nach drei Jahren nicht vor, zurückzugehen.”

“I moved to Lisbon to work for three years before I moved to Berlin. I had no fixed job other than some freelance work, but it was not my intention to keep doing that. I applied for a job in Berlin and thought, “okay I’ll just try it”. And suddenly, they said “yes!”,  so I had to move. I didn’t really have the idea of moving on my own, but after the job offer, everything moved very fast. Now, I am working as a web designer.

I enjoy the freedom and culture of Berlin, and the fact that we can step into a new culture without knowing it. I like the feeling you have when you meet people that are not from here, whether it’s work or just the U Bahn. Even though a lot of people say Berlin is not Germany, the language and culture have sometimes been a challenge. In fact, after 3 years, I don't see myself living in my country again soon.”

Nicola, 39, from Italy, now in Berlin

“Ich denke nicht, dass das Wort ‘Emigrant’ auf mich zutrifft. Ich bin nicht aus Italien weggezogen, weil ich einen Beruf brauchte wie meine Landsleute vor 60 Jahren. Ich habe dort als Rechtsanwalt gearbeitet und gut verdient. Ich bin ausgewandert, weil ich enttäuscht von meinem Land war. Ich bin schwul. Der Italienische Staat garantiert keine Chancengleichheit für homosexuelle Paare, zum Beispiel im Bereich Sozialversicherung. Das Gesetz sollte das staatsbürgerliche Bewusstsein bilden. Wenn es das nicht tut, sind diese Themen nur eine Frage der persönliche Meinungen. Aber das sind sie eigentlich nicht. Ich verlange vom Staat, an den ich Steuern und Sozialabgaben zahle, mich zu behandeln wie jeden anderen Bürger. Jedenfalls hängt meine Entscheidung nicht nur von meiner persönlichen Situation ab. Ich wollte nicht in einem Land leben, wo Korruption die Regel ist und wissenschaftlicher Fortschritt verteufelt wird. Deswegen habe ich einen Sprung ins Ungewisse gemacht und bin nach Berlin gezogen. Hier arbeite ich als Pilates-Lehrer und Tänzer. Und ich fühle mich vollständig integriert.

Ich liebe meine Heimat und meine Familie. Aber ich vermisse mein Leben in Italien nicht.“

“I don’t think the word ‘emigrant’ suits me well. I didn’t leave Italy because I was looking for a job like my fellow country people 60 years ago. Back in Italy, I worked as a lawyer and I earned good money. The reason why I left is that I was unhappy with my country. I am gay, but the Italian state doesn’t guarantee equal opportunities to homosexual couples, for example in terms of social security. The law is supposed to shape civic consciousness. When it doesn’t, such topics become just a matter of personal opinions. But they aren’t. I demand from the state, to whom I pay my taxes and contributions, to be treated just like any other citizen. Anyway, my decision to leave didn’t depend only on my personal situation. I just wasn’t comfortable living in a place where corruption is the norm and scientific progress is demonised. So I took a leap into the unknown and moved to Berlin. Here I work as pilates instructor and dancer. And I feel perfectly integrated.

I love my homeland and my family. But I don’t miss life in Italy.”

Stefano, 39, from Italy, now in Berlin

“Zwei Dinge haben mich nach Berlin geführt: Das Bedürfnis nach neuen Erlebnissen und das Bewusstsein, dass die Lage in Italien immer schlechter wird. Ich komme aus Sardinien, einer Randregion Italiens, die natürlich weniger Möglichkeiten bieten kann als eine Metropole. Aber in Mailand oder Rom wäre es das Gleiche. Es ist eine Frage der Einstellung: Trotz ihres Status sind diese großen Städte nicht so aufgeschlossen und weltoffen wie Berlin.

In meiner Heimatstadt habe ich als Musiklehrer gearbeitet und die natürlichste Sache - nämlich für die eigene Arbeit bezahlt zu werden - war leider nicht so einfach. Jetzt bin ich Musiker und Lehrer für Audioproduktionen. Aber es war kein Erfolg über Nacht. Ich habe viel gearbeitet, und das nicht immer in meinem Bereich. Und ich habe bemerkt, dass es in Italien viel komplizierter ist ‘klarzukommen’ als in Deutschland.

Ich fahre bald zurück, um einen Dokumentarfilm über meine Heimat zu produzieren. Das macht mich stolz und froh, aber ich werde nicht bleiben. Zu viele wundervolle Menschen in Italien mühen sich damit ab, ihr eigenes Talent auszudrücken: Ich will nicht so leben.”

“Two things have led me to Berlin: the need for new experiences and the awareness that the Italian situation is getting worse and worse. I am from Sardinia, a peripheral region of Italy which of course can’t offer the same opportunities as a metropolis. But it would be the same in Milan or Rome. It’s a matter of attitude: despite their status, these big cities are not as broad-minded and internationally-oriented as Berlin.

Back in my hometown I worked as a music teacher, and the most natural thing - getting paid for your work - wasn’t as obvious as it should be. Now I am an artist, an audio production instructor and a sound designer. It wasn’t an overnight success, though. I did several different jobs, not always in my field. And I’ve realised that even just ‘getting by’ is way harder in Italy than in Germany.

I’m going back soon to produce a documentary about my homeland. This makes me happy and proud, but I’m not going to stay. Too many valuable people in Italy struggle to express their talent: I don’t want to live like this.”
