Kid Warrior: The Xiuhtezcatl Martinez Story
This short video is about a 14-year-old boy named Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, who is an environmental activist and has organized over 100 rallies, events and conferences. What caught my attention about this video is the fact that he is as young as he is and he is already trying to make a difference in the world. Kids at his age today are mostly just fixated on the latest technologies, social media and keeping track of their favorite celebrities’ lives.
From the beginning, you see a glimpse of Martinez and how well spoken he is for his age. You can’t help but listen to this slim, long haired child and makes you eager to find out what he is all about. Throughout the video, his younger brother looks up to his older brother and tries to be like him. When Martinez is with his friends on the roof, you remember that he is just a child because he acts like one around his peers, but then you think how could this young boy organize protests and give speeches to educate other kids? He is still a kid, he needs to have that time with his friends, but he also dedicates his time to trying to make a difference in the world.
The story in the beginning, you hear what Martinez’s mission in life is, where he’s headed, what he’s accomplishing and what he hopes to accomplish. Then the story transitions into where he’s from, his background, his family’s background and why he is who he is today. His dad taught him traditional Aztec dances that he embraces and his younger brother dances as well.
Towards the end, Martinez tells the audience what he hopes his grandchildren will see in the future and how his generation needs to fight for a better environment. The last scene, you see his hand up in the air, just how it was in the opening scene. The way the video was structured work very well, and makes it a compelling and influential story.
