Mouth To Ear
The strange confluence of a moving speaker cone, modified microphones, muted low-frequency feedback and code, Mouth to Ear is a generative audio composition exploring the tonal possibilities of feedback combined with the element of chance in an unstable interaction of changing physical quantities.
Developed specifically for the Call & Response 3D sound system, the work plays with aspects of broadcast, reception, and reproduction around the human response to systems of communication and their pervasive signal networks.
Mouth to Ear is part of a series initiated by the piece Ear to Mouth and continuing with Light Loop, Oscillations in Love and Light and Garden of Signals. Presented in 13.1 channel sound.

Generative Composition talk to Ableton User Group Melbourne
On Wednesday night I gave my talk and it was generally well received. One aim was to provide enough techniques for most people to get something from the talk even if they did not want to get into generative/algorithmic composition.
the final talk was a lot more on follow actions rather than on AC Toolbox as I did more exploration for illustration.
Here is a minute long recording of my sound sculpture in action. I particularly like how crisp the higher frequencies sound, and the way that the swinging bottles seem to attempt to find a rhythm
Generative Sound Sculpture
Expanding on the recyclable / analogue theme I have decided to build myself a sound sculpture using old glass bottles, cuttings of rope and/or old shoelaces & a wooden frame reclaimed from the roadside.
This sculpture should be placed outside, with maximum sonic effect occurring during a storm. This generative instrument is primarily controlled by two variables; the wind blowing the bottles, negating the timbre of the strike (much like a wind chime), and the rain water that collects in the bottles determining the pitch, or frequency. Throughout the storm the bottles will fill up at different rates therefore generating a piece played entirely by the elements.
P3 PROJECT
For my practice 3 project I have felt inspired to create a generative instrument using only recycled materials. My field of musical exploration has always featured primarily digital & electronic components, so for this task I shall strive to step away from this and work only with the physical, focussing on organic & human-produced waste. I feel that this preservation of the natural ties in with the idea of making sounds using recycled & reclaimed objects. Upon first inspection it seems to me that there has been a distinct lack of research into the creation of generative instruments using recycled materials, however as my progress continues i’m sure that i’ll find other experiments conducted by my peers.
I wish I had more "spare" time for things like SuperCollider.
