Gastro Corridor Expands With Planned Pizza Restaurant at 5-7 Genesee Street

Buffalo Rising covers the opening of a new pizza restaurant along the Genesee Gateway between the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and downtown. And while it's true that the owners plan to restore and renovate a previously abandoned eyesore into a bistro with apartments on top there is even a bigger story. Buffalo Rising points out that now there are 19 existing or planned restaurants that are found within a corridor that was largely abandoned and avoided. 

The food establishments are not the only thing bringing the Electric District back to life. This Spring the Genesee Streetscape project is about to begin following other similar projects across the city including Seneca, Ohio, Niagara, and Main. A $46M Catholic Health headquarters was recently completed, the Genesee Gateway apartments have been restored and opened, and the adaptive reuse project The Planing Mill is pursuing LEED certifcation. The Genesee Gateway is just one neighborhood of many showing signs of growth and revitalization across the city.

Genesee Gateway Streetscape Project Expected to Start Next Spring

Near the city's downtown core Seneca St., Niagara St., Ohio St., and Main St. are all receiving extensive makeovers; next year Genesee St. will join the list. The project has recently been expanded to Elm St., located another block east and where the brand new $46 million Catholic Health headquarters stands. An additional $42 million of investment is expected along the corridor that stretches along just south of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Spanning out from the Electric Tower the Genesee Gateway is one of the most central avenues taken to access downtown. New businesses include Dog e Style, Tappo Restaurant, Oshun Seafood Restaurant, Genesee Gateway, LLC, 112 Genesee, Big Ditch Brewing Company, and The Planing Mill,  The street remodel will follow work that is similarly being done along the 700 block of Main St. including "landscaping, sidewalks, lighting, bump-outs, street resurfacing, and green infrastructure enhancements."

Genesee Gateway Reopens

A historic row of buildings between Ellicott and Oak Streets that were on track for demolition have been fully restored and are once again filled with tenants. Commercial tenants have returned to the first floor while luxury apartments are now available upstairs with monthly costs running between $1,600 and $1,700. The newly revamped buildings are another sign of success in the burgeoning Electric District; an area once known for its high vacancy rate.
