Repetition is used in the Scriptures to emphasize the importance of something. In Genesis 1, God said that His creation was “good” six times, and “very good” once. This repetition teaches us that everything God created was good. That means, the heavens, land, seas, plants, trees, days, nights, sun, moon, stars, animals and humans were created for good, with good intentions and to serve a good purpose. It also means that the humankind is called to do good and to be morally good (pure). The world and all its inhabitants were made to be coherent, perfectly co-existing under the sovereign control of God, and to have an intimate relationship with Him. That means, there is no chaos or rebellion. Grief or sadness. There is only joy, fulfillment, satisfaction and love.
It is important for us to realize that God considers His creation good because we can see more cleary the effect of sin on Adam and Eve’s lives when they decided to turn their backs on God. This is incredibly sad because in Eden, there is an overflowing of beauty, love and life. It is the paradise every one of us would die to be in. There is the ability to see God face to face and to talk to Him so casually. They could ask God questions about humanity, the creation, the whole universe... and they turned away from that. Adam and Eve turned away from a life of no heartache, sorrow, pain or misery. Instead, they ran into a life of hardships, betrayal, chaos and sin.
It is vital for us to realize how good the world was when God created it, because as we look around in our society today, we can tell the difference of a life with God and a life without God under sin’s curse. The terrorism, school shootings, massacres, greedy government officials, cheating partners and lying little children are all evidences of a sin-cursed world. But we are not hopeless, because even until today, we can see the goodness of God through the people He created, Christians or non-Christians alike. We can see His majesty in the way nature provides for us. But most importantly, we can see the goodness of God through the bible, with the promise of Jesus’ salvation and second coming.
God is saying, we are never good enough on our own; we are meant to have a relationship with Him. We are meant to do His will, be morally pure, live a life apart from evil, and be in a perfect relationship with the whole creation. God is saying we are meant to live a life filled with joy and rejoicing. He promises that He would create a new Earth for us, much better than the one Adam and Eve experienced. We can receive that promise by having faith in Jesus Christ. Once we genuinely believe in His name and on what He did on the cross, not only do we receive the gift of salvation and the promise of a new Earth, but God also transforms our hearts and brings us conviction, to change the way we live and to be the ones to show His goodness here on Earth.
