Today, we have time to read together Genesis chapter 35, the translated version of the Bible. This chapter begins with God ordering Jacob to return to Beth-el to be purified and set up a platform after the tragic event at Shechem. Jacob obeys this and orders his family to abandon the stranger and cleanse themselves. Upon arriving at Beth-el, Jacob builds an altar to God, confirms the name of Israel again by God, and reaffirms the succession of the Abrahamic Covenant. This chapter also chronicles the sad story of Jacob's favorite wife, Rachel, who died giving birth to Benjamin, and the death of Deborah, Rebekah's nanny. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem. And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother. Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth. Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him. And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him. So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel. Then they journeyed from Bethel. No Fear in Faith

There was quite a few significant events that occurred in Genesis 35 but my heart was drawn to Genesis 35:2-5. 

“So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him,’Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.’ So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.” - Genesis 35:2-5

The moment that Jacob told his household to purify themselves, everyone removed anything that hindered their focus on God. They gave Jacob their foreign gods and rings, which he buried away. Then they set out on a journey to Bethel, meaning “house of God”. What amazes me is what happened once they chose to obey God. 

“...the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.” – Genesis 35:5

I think we all need to read that verse again. Jacob and his household didn’t need to worry about persecutors as they travelled to Bethel to build an altar to God. Why? Because the terror of God came and no one pursued them. No one. Not one single person stopped them. Not one person nor one thing nor Satan can stop Jacob and his household from worshipping the Lord.

“If God is for us, then who can be against us?” This statement rings so true in this story. God is for Jacob and Jacob knows that very well. He even said that God answered him in his distress and has been with him wherever he went (Gen. 35:3). And God continued to be with him as he journeyed to Bethel.

These past few months, there have been constant stories about Christians being persecuted for their faith. People are brutally harmed and killed for worshipping God in other countries, but this persecution doesn’t stop them in their faith. They continue to sing praises and pray wholeheartedly to our God, even if a gun was put to their head. Why do they continue to sing and pray when death is near for them? Because they know that God is for them, not against them. They remain rooted in their faith in Jesus.

In times like this, I’m reminded of how blessed I am to live in Canada, a country with the freedom of speech and religion. Like Jacob, I don’t need to have any fear in serving and worshipping the Lord because I believe that God has made Canada into what it is today and continues to be with this beloved country. To be honest, I don’t know much about history but one thing I do know – that after many wars and deaths, Canada is now a place where I don’t have to be afraid of being persecuted to death for my faith. And this is something to praise God for.

Today also happens to be Remembrance Day, the day to remember the soldiers who have died for our country. They played a huge part in our country’s history. May God bring comfort and peace to families and friends who were impacted by the death of their loved ones from this historic event.
