days had past into weeks and weeks into months. all of it blurred into a single endless expanse, broken only by her. X5-326 was the only constant amongst the haze of his broken mind. one moment he was there -- present, his mission and his assignment as clear to him as daylight seeping through the cracks in the ceiling of the warehouse she had imprisoned him within -- and the next he was was somewhere else. the feeling of fleeting touches across his skin, words against his ear and in his head, fractured memories that were becoming clearer and clearer with every passing day. sometimes he was back in the chair -- the feeling of having his brain dissected, split open, splayed out and removed and put back in over and over unmade and made again and again left him screaming and she was there too -- her hands on his face and guiding him back only to find himself cast back into that cold, unfeeling nothing that had his hands around her throat.
it was all so messy. so broken apart he couldn’t tell what was real anymore. what had happened and what was GOING to happen, all of it had combined until it felt like all things were happening all at the same time and he could feel it -- that broken and ugly thing inside of him clawing back to the surface until he was finally alive again.
“ parker -- ” her name choked in his throat, unworthy of addressing her how he used to before all the poison that had left his lips, before all the violence his hands had committed. he found himself suddenly overwhelmed with emotion, his eyes burning as tears made tracks down his checks through the grime and the dry blood and the pain -- god, his heart. it ached and it ached until it felt as if he couldn’t breathe. “ parker, i’m sorry. i’m so sorry, please ---- it wasn’t me, it wasn’t me. i couldn’t stop, i couldn’t stop myself. i tried, please i tried to fight them. i can feel it, they got in my head. ”
he could still feel that cold clarity threatening to take hold. so much was so much simpler and there had been no pain. no guilt or remorse, just the assignment but now -- oh it hurt. it hurt so much he wanted to crumble into ash. she was there, as sudden as before, as if she had always been there and he just hadn’t been able to see her. her hands on his face, guiding him to look at her even as he choked on muffled sounds of guilt and sorrow. he couldn’t see her clearly through his tears but she pressed her lips against his own and he responded before he could break again. it was messy and wet, teeth knocking too hard against each other in the clumsiness of it all and nate gasped and shuddered and leaned his forehead against hers like he could freeze time.
“ everything i said ---- it was all a lie. all of it. i’m so sorry. ”
