Chiasmata update!

In which there’s no problems. The machinery of the heavens is perfect.

And we have a complete group of 12! (This image is a small version of the full one because tumblr only accepts a low file size). Here's some details and/or stuff you might've seen or not, going in order.

It's relatively obvious, but there's a certain Japanese theme (like how the original group has an Italian theme as per the Inferno), as everyone has a Japanese weapon and each group has one person whose references to certain traditions are a bit more obvious. The group would be traveling to Jigoku, not Inferno, chapters would be called Fumi, not Canto, etc.

Sam uses a tantou, that is, a type of short sword that might also be called just a dagger. When I was making a plan for this, I was considering weapon choices influenced by personality.

Aidan uses a naginata. It's similar to a glaive or a guandao but it is yet something different. It's stereotypically also used by women but I thought to shake that up.

Bonnie's weapon is a bit more obscure, as in that it's tekkou-kagi; 'ninja' claws that was used more to climb with. She's shown using one here, but if her other arm is intact, then she totally uses two.

Daniel uses a kusarigama, which is also the only real way for me to see a scythe as a realistic weapon (the blade is curved towards you!), because it's been used as one in that form. Around his arm is a red and white lint.

Omar's weapon is a yari, edited in shape to resemble his symbol. I was also inspired by Kyouko Sakura's spear.

Clara's weapon looks similar to Sam's, but is different as it is a yoroi-doushi, an armor-breaking dagger.

Leonardo is the odd one out.

Jacqueline's uniform was based on the okappiki - Edo period law enforcers, and she thus uses the weapon that they used, that is, a jitte.

Dawn's weapon is kunai, and I made her uniform to slightly resemble ninja robes (the real ones, not the stereotypical ones).

Ash uses a rope dart. Poisoned weapons sound cool, until you realize that often, it just seeps back out with the blood. I figured that thus, a precision weapon is better if you want to make use of it.

David's weapon is similarly more obscure but I based it off a monk staff that you often see in media. Sort of a reference how he isn't really a fighter.

Anders, finally, uses a chigiriki (I didn't draw the weight). He's also holding an ofuda (paper talisman) and is surrounded by shimenawa (rope that's used to mark where the transition is between the mundane and the sacred).

me, staring off into space: daniel flemings superhero name is motor. thats a name people call him. he 100% actually goes by the word “motor” in some places. people have to stare him in his graphic-design-is-my-passion-lookin helmet and call him motor. as a name. to his face

I know why Jacqueline Jones is 'the woman who brought the peace' and I'm pretty sure =) Have you discovered it too?

TRICK QUESTION ANON, she’s actually the woman who BOUGHT the peace so your q is unparseable ;P

…but no I don’t know why she’s called that.  I thought it was “brought the peace” originally, and that suggests her being in the army or police or something.  but “bought the peace” sounds like she brokered some sort of specific deal or agreement, which could be done from that or another vantage, and I’m not sure what that’d be!

I haven’t drawn Shade in a while, so here he is, with a costume change!

I’ve thought a lot about Shade since I last talked about him, so more about him under the cut

Despite totally being a self-insert, Shade is still a pretty important character to me, so I have fun thinking about him. As a result, he’s bound to change a bit as I think, so here are a few of them.

I’ve aged him up to 18 to account for my age change since I’ve made him (he’s still totally a slightly-different self-insert), although “in universe” he’s only gained his powers 9 months ago

He was still TOTALLY a nervous wreck when he first gained his powers, but it’s been 9 months and he’s adjusted a lot. Still quiet, still stutters a BUNCH, especially when under pressure, still would rather NEVER be in the spotlight, but he’s comfortable about being a hero and is a lot more confident talking with his friends (mostly nondescript heroes in the same nondescript area).

I mean this was the case before,but being in-costume really gives him a lot of confidence? He barely stutters and carries himself a lot more confidently. Although he still gets awkward if asked a personal question, he’s a lot better at not focusing on himself when a superhero

I’m thinking of changing his power from “phasing through SOLID objects” to simply straight up intangibility. The “solid object” thing originated in me trying to make the power more unique, but honestly the more I think about it the more complications there are, and I sort of just don’t want to bother with that any more? He’s not part of anything canon, and the power originated from me misunderstanding k2′s writing in the first place, so it’s probably alright to make such a minuscule change.

This isn’t really a change rather than a specification, but he can make only parts of himself intangible and his whole body stays together, so as to be able to stick an arm through a wall without falling through the floor. In order to stand the bottom of his shoes have to be tangible at the very least.

In a similar strain, his intangibility can extend to objects he touches (and objects those objects touch) up to a certain distance, and a certain size of object. This explains how his clothes come with him. He can also make another person entirely intangible if he’s touching them and they’re close, but objects bigger than that wouldn’t be effected.

He doesn’t need air if fully submerged in an object, which is really just a fail-safe to prevent him from passing out and dying for phasing in an object for too long.

Using Shade’s power, if Shade becomes tangible again inside another object, the object is destroyed wherever Shade comes back in. This applies to anything he’s making intangible. Other similar powers may work differently in this circumstance. Just a part of his powers.

He still has increased hearing, which he uses to determine the distance and location of objects when he’s phased in an object and cannot see. Sort of like echolocation, but he’s not quite as good at it.

(all of this is the case unless k2 says it’s impossible for an obvious or spoiler-y reason, in which case oh well, disregard all of this, strike whatever doesn’t work, but this seems more possible than a person opening tears into other worlds and someone can totally do that, so problems are unlikely, if still possible, in my mind)

The spines that sprout because of his side-effect are more concentrated, and cluster on the “tops” of his limbs. I’ll draw a sketch soon.

Another story thing: a few weeks after gaining his powers, the League convinced him to contact his parents. Shade still hasn’t told them he’s a superhuman— the story is that Shade got kidnapped by a low-level villain and was rescued by the League. He’s “working as an intern” to thank them, until he goes to college. His parents disapprove, but he figures that’s better than them knowing he’s a superhuman or thinking he’s dead. He still visits.

Most things are pretty the same with only small differences, and some of this is just restating what was already “canon” for him, but I fell like it’s nice to state a lot of it.

Honestly, this isn’t everything. The way I think about him and his personality is different than when I created him, and I’ll never be able to capture that in text, but I really don’t need to? I’m totally okay for him to be used for anything in geneverse-canon, and if that happens he’s no longer fully “mine,” and the way I think about his personality doesn’t really matter as much, which I’m TOTALLY okay with. I’m also okay with him never being used for anything canon, so you know, whatever comes, comes. Either way, this stupid self-insert is pretty cool in my book, and I had fun drawing him.
