Water Striders (Genus Metrobates), taken July 3, 2026, in New Hampshire, US
Thousands of water striders striding together across the surface of a lake! Throughout the day, the water striders are usually evenly distributed across the lake's surface, but they congregate into large herds in the morning and evening. These groups look like amorphous black blobs on the water, occasionally dissipating and reforming as the striders break formation to escape predators. Safety in numbers is true at any size!
