Gen Y Open Ending (Fans Votes)
(Reposting due to issues with earlier post)
There has been a lot of talk about Gen Y and it’s ending and how the fans will get to decide the ending. The only information I could come up is this interview above where Bas and Kim briefly talk about it. (Timestamp: 3.40)
I think when the time comes fans will vote for who should end up with who so I am just sharing the information I know so far about it. Apparently, everyone who watch the show will get to vote on how ending should happen and if it’s a vote for pairing I think we’ll get a chance about it, especially with increasing battle of ThanuWayu and ThanuPhai pairing.
I have mixed feelings about this because it feels like if the voting does not go the way they originally intended it will not only cause issues with conflicting storylines but might also cause issue with fandoms and actors, especially the current popular and ever growing DunBas.
Currently where the storyline is set up and where it is hinting towards is strongly pointing towards ThanuWayu as endgame and this seems their original plan because they started DunBas and the fanservice even before the series started. But with voting it’s 50-50 on how it will end, unless they decide to air both versions (fans and original version).
As Bas talks about it in the video below, he says it’ll be a special ending, open end kind of series as fans will get to decide the ending of the show and they will wait an see what the results will be. And I think the main ending that’ll be of interest which is major storyline for series over 3 seasons will be ThanuWayu/ThanuPhai (triangle of sorts) and it’ll also involve other side stories but I believe main voting plot will be on this triangle.
They really started the promotions of series with DunBas and strongly hinting with WayuThanu but as it’s based on book in which ThanuPhai end up together, they might wanted to gauge audience reaction or decided to play safe with voting if this ship (DunBas - ThanuWayu) doesn’t get worked out. But I think it has strong chances of backfiring now with increasing fandom of DunBas and still continuous promotion of this ship. So much that on social media, especially on Instagram Bas has certain “claim” over Dun based on certain posts and comments.
Secondly, there is another interview of Bas after episode 9 that fans reacted quite badly with the shift in story (ThanuPhai) so much that some fans were claiming to burn Dun’s car! Bas did the interview to clarify on this and asking them remain calm and watch the remaining 3 episodes (and whether his car will burn or not... lol.. Bas tried to joke on it but he was appreciative the love Wayu is getting but also telling the fans to wait and watch). Well.. if episode 9 evoked that reaction, I can’t imagine how they’ll be reacting in episode 10.

Also, I have noticed apart from active DunBas fans and here, ThanuWayu fans, almost on every other platform ThanuPhai pairing is being admired so it’ll be quite a competition with voting and also might have angry shippers to deal with.
But coming back to the interview, I am not sure right now how the voting and ending will work. What if, they end the series as an open ending as they are saying and asks fans to vote what they feel ending will be. They might film the ending as special episode or maybe just reveal fan ending without filming it? But also, how much will it affect their storylines, their original ideas and if they have to change them in midst depending on when the voting takes place. It could create serious mess of storyline too, the original one if they completely turn it in other direction and not only for this triangle but so many other characters too.
I honestly think it wasn’t a wise decision to let the series end hand over to fans, they should just stick to their original plans and should have faith in their writing, actors rather than giving it to fans. This is why edits and fanfictions exist, for fans to express, not to control series narrative.
