The twigs snapped under your feet as you followed your hulking boyfriend through the trail, having lost the ability to enjoy the fresh air about an hour ago. You wanted to support Simon in everything he did and showed interested in after retirement, but this was getting tough.
Simon had recently gotten very into geocaching, as it gave him the same feeling completing a mission successfully did. He followed instructions, tracked something down, retrieved information. Simon loved it.
Being the sweet girlfriend you are, you went with him neatly every time he invited you, only turning him down for work or prior engagements. They were usually quick, maybe two hours maximum at most, and he’d always get you a little treat after the matter. Today however, Simon had got it in his head that the two of you would be able to get to four geocaches.
He’d driven you about an hour away from home, grinning ear to ear while explaining how fun it would be. There were exposed rock faces in this preserve, and tons of downed trees, hinting at complex hiding spots.
The first three caches were fun, only taking about two hours to complete. Simon had to scale a tree to get to the second, prompting you to take a photo of his butt as he clung to the bark as he shouted down at you to quit it. The third cache had a pretty stone that he collected for you, leaving a coin in the box in exchange.
The fourth cache was not where it said it would be, which lead to a very disappointed Simon. He knew you were getting tired, you’d already been out for three hours at this point, including the drive, which would also be an hour home. He was definitely going to take you to dinner after this.
But, as the angel you are, you comforted him, pressing a kiss to his cheek and telling him to keep looking.
“It’s somewhere out here Si.. I don’t mind,” you cooed, sporting the sweetest smile he’d ever seen. You really thought it would only be a couple more minutes, maybe the coordinates were off.
With the O.K., Simon thanked you enthusiastically, and continued searching. But it had been an hour since, and you were pretty much done.
“Si, I know I said I don’t mind but, it’s been an hour, and it’s getting dark,” you said, glancing at the horizon through the trees as Simon looked down at his phone, and then up at the forest.
His thick fingers pinched the cracked screen of his crappy Motorola, furrowed brows and slightly hung open jaw adorned his features.
“I know love.. m’sorry.. ye know I’ll get ye back safe, can I look f’just a couple more minutes?”
You sighed, eyes meeting the love of your life, resembling a kicked puppy. How could you say no?
“Alright, 15 minutes, and then you’re taking me back to the car park and we’re getting food,” you replied, crossing your arms and jutting out a hip.
“Was already plannin’ on taking ye somewhere nice dove,” he grins, his eyes thanking you quietly.
When ten minutes had passed, you began to orient yourself in the direction of the trail again, knowing you’d be heading back with or without finding the last cache. It was not thirty seconds later did you hear a chuckle, and the sound of a rusted tin box popping open.
As your head whipped around, Simon was on his knees, a huge smile plastered on his face while he dug through the box at the base of a tree. It was shoved into roots that had been covered by the roughage.
“You found it!” You gasped, trotting over to peer inside, seeing a few items strewn in the box, but mainly tiny sticks and nuts, probably from kids.
Simon gently reached in, grabbing a small toy soldier from the bottom, and presenting it to you with a proud smile.
“Yer army man found one left behind.”
And yes, Simon did in fact bring you to a nice restaurant afterwards.
Yea he’s so 2000s dad
In January of 2024, we began anonymously writing an online multimedia musical called En Abîme with our friends Lana Gaige and Katie Hameetman. The musical was an Alternate Reality Game (an ARG) — an immersive experience that never acknowledged that it was fiction. 100+ webpages, 100k+ words, five geocaches scattered across the East Coast, and one loyal player base later, En Abîme has come to an end — which means we can finally talk about it!
En Abîme’s story followed a group of data ghosts made up of their own archive, such as a vaudeville singer trapped in a wax cylinder or a ‘90s riot grrrl made from her zines. From following thousands of users on social media as a spooky 1930s trailhead to hiding puzzles in library books to writing encoded emails to stickering NYC punk bars from 5pm until 3am, this has been an singular creative and learning experience. We coded, we sang, we postered, we crafted, we ran games, and we built an incredible audience up from total anonymous scratch!
We’ve made the website more linear, so you can now read through it chronologically like a webcomic here! Credits and more information about En Abîme are available on our website. And for those looking for our next ARG — stay curious the next time you see a spooky sticker or run into a mysterious link. It could be just the tip of a two-year artistic project!
Thank you to Lana and Katie for creating this with us, and to Lara Priya Sachdeva and Andrew Matos for acting!
And last but not least, a HUGE thank you to everyone who played!
Just started geocaching today and oohhh my paws we have GOT to make this more popular in the community.
Download the app and get out there and start geocaching! Go hunting, sniffing, scavenging! It’s so fun and gives us a chance to explore! My fellow creatures and such, if you’re looking for something to do outdoors, put on your coat and go look for some geocaches!
Stay safe of course, don’t trespass, and stay on any trails if you can! My fellow animals need a good reason to know their way around the territory, this is an opportunity!
