New Procol Harum Album Coming in April
As it celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017, Procol Harum is prepping its first studio album in 14 years.
The band - best known for “A Whiter Shade of Pale” and for launching guitarist Robin Trower’s solo career - will release Novum on April 21. It’ll be the band’s first album since 2003’s The Well’s on Fire.
It’ll also be Procol’s first album that doesn’t feature the lyrics of Keith Reid, who’d been credited as a non-performing band member since the group’s 1967 founding. Novum, appropriately, is Latin for "new thing."
“Eventually, I think Reid and I came to a crossroads,” the band’s sole original member, singer/pianist Gary Brooker, told Procolharum.com.
“You either went this way, or you went that way. And he went that way. And I went the other way. That’s the only way I can describe it, a crossroads.”
Brooker’s joined on Novum by guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, bassist Matt Pegg, organist Josh Phillips and drummer Geoff Dunn. Procol Harum have European tour dates scheduled beginning in March through Oct. 3.

Song Review: Procol Harum - “Don’t Get Caught”
As Procol Harum marks its 50th anniversary in 2017, the “A Whiter Shade Pale” band is celebrating with its first studio album since 2003.
Novum is out April 21.
The title means “new thing.” And while Procol are anything but, there is something novel about the band on this first record since The Well’s On Fire.
Novum is the only Procol Harum LP to not feature lyrics from Keith Reid. As we shall hear, this is not a good development; Reid’s been so important to the band’s mystique that he’s always been credited as a non-performing member.
Reid’s quirky witticisms are sorely missing from the first single, “Don’t Get Caught,” which sounds a bit like the theme from “The Greatest American Hero” and spends its five-plus minute run time looking back and pledging to take it easy going forward. Singer/pianist Gary Brooker, the band’s sole remaining original member, is in fine voice, although his instrument is scratchier than it was in the past.
When you’re young you gotta grab what you can/make your name ‘round the land/but remember all the things you’ve been taught/and never, never, ever get caught, he sings.
Combined with the poppy musical accompaniment, these lyrics ensure “Don’t Get Caught” bears little resemblance to songs such as “The Devil Came from Kansas” or “A Salty Dog.” Devoid of a fat guitar solo, and with no fanciful orchestration, “Don’t Get Caught” will leave listeners searching for cryptic Reid-isms such as, don’t beg for silver paper when I’m trying to sell you cheese, feeling disappointed.
That leaves Brooker’s pipes. And despite the understandable changes it’s undergone over the past five decades, Brooker’s voice is the one thing that makes this sound like a Procol Harum song.
Unfortunately, “Don’t Get Caught” is not a good Procol Harum song.
