Ontario Reign forward Geoff Walker is the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Dec. 29- Jan. 4. It is the second time in his career he has won the weekly award.

Walker’s Word

On the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series we caught up with the courageous team boss…

Question (Q): How did this project come about?

Geoff Walker (GW): “It all started with the British Garmin Arenacross Tour which is a fantastic series that we’ve suppored from the beginning. In only its second year, the arenas have been packed to capacity and my personal passion for this style of racing knows no bounds—the rider’s performances are totally on show to the fans which leaves no room for crying, a zero BS policy.

“I was lucky enough to open discussions with Cyrille a few weeks before series began and sign him up, along with British MX and SX legend Carl Nunn, to head the team. Cyrille raced the series  in year one and I was impressed by his approach to the racing and his solid pace on track.”

Q: So how did you get the idea to tackle the American supercross circuit?

GW: “I try to instill in people I work with the idea that the mind is strongest thing on earth. Having taken on some of the toughest races at the highest level—where perhaps I had no right to be—I have used a strong mind and my will to overcome the toughest situations.

“Coming over here to race has always been a part of me—racing Endurocross and the 24 Hours of Glen Helen have been highlights and I have a fantastic network of amazing friends out here—and a somewhat crazy idea to take the very essence and attitude of this team to the greatest show on earth—then, in my mind, nothing can stop you.”

Q: What was the goal of this little adventure?

GW: The goal with this adventure was the same as wilth all the others—to take on a challenge and to give it 100 per cent, to perform at the highest level. Taking the SR75-Molson team name to the absolute pinnacle of our sport has been a dream of mine since I started shaping SR75 into a team structure. We are a small team with a big dream and those dreams are becoming a reality through hard work and a somewhat wacky outlook.”

Q: As far as logistics go, what was the most difficult task you encountered?

GW: “Suzuki UK, with the help of Luke Plummer, was instantly on the case when a request for a bike went in. LP was onto his contacts in California and, pretty soon, there was an offer of a bike through Chris Denison and his dirt Rider Magazine test fleet, which we finalized week before departure.

“As with any project this size, finances keep raising their heads. This is an area which causes slow moving traffic from an organizational point of view.”

Q: What was your first impression of the track during track walk?

GW: “Scary! The landing angles and scale are the least friendly I have seen. This is supercross at the highest level and I cannot express just how scary a place this is when you are asking someone to go out and risk so much in the pursuit of the dream.”

Q: What did you perceive Cyril’s impression was?

GW: “As is the way with Cyrille, he smiled his way around the track walk while talking to himself and working out the angles and combinations—as well as what would or would not be possible to complete in the very short training session before qualifying began.”

Q: What changes did you have to make after practice?

GW: Due to our limited test schedule in the lead up to the race, we were behind the game a bit. We basically changed the angle the bike was sitting at, with a wheelbase change, re-set sag, stiffening of the forks and shock, handlebar angle, lever angles and a new, more aggressive power-curve plug (as delivered by Suzuki’s USA Frankie Garcia). None of this was ideal, as we were, in effect, still testing during the few minutes required to find rhythm and dial the track in.”

Q: What things did you learn from the Las Vegas race?

GW: “Obviously myself and Cyrille have discussed the Vegas experience in depth and the biggest factor we faced was simply the lack of track time in our build up, to give him a change to fully attack from the off. Changes would be made in a natural search for improvement, but making changes ‘blind’ adds a multitude of pressure on everyone. Our biggest desire would be the chance to race another supercross straight away, as we made massive gains every single lap.”

Geoff Walker is the man behind Re-Fuze, he lovingly takes wood and found objects and makes them into something special. His years in carpentry have given him valuable skills and enables him to turn his hand to anything and make otherwise useless materials into something highly desirable. His recent commissions have included furniture for Dalston Superstore.

Walker’s passion for wood is shown in the beautiful tables he has hand-made, mixing together woods from different trees, using the different colours and hues of the timber Geoff takes the random and mish-mashed found pieces of wood(whether from broken discarded doors, ends of jobs and skip finds) and creates order with the pattern he devises for the tops. Some of the patterns resemble fabric and look every bit as intricate as the weave they are reminiscent of.

In addition to the tables, Walker has produced some extraordinary table lamps, again all from found objects, that work beautifully with his tables but would also work in equally as well in a variety of settings and in varying styles of interior.
