Writing update

As CampNaNo ends today, my wordcount for my WiP, Geonova, for April is 5,549. Not terrific but also not terrible. I have also been rewriting the beginning of book 1, as well as started a short story.

Got 2k done today and thus passed 60k in total. I’m getting this done!

Well, this is awkward

I had forgotten about the patrol boat captain who was presumed lost at the beginning of Geonova. Meant to put her back into the narrative at some point, but I figured I’d get the other characters forget about her too. Poor Captain Talous.

“I'm sorry, Captain,” said Gild. “We lost your signal so we presumed you had been lost.” Even as he was saying it he realised how terrible that sounded. “Must be the proximity to the giant hole in the sky,” said Talous. “I got a bit soaked and my engine's gone. I've been drifting for days.” “We'll get someone out to tow you in right away,” said Gild. “We've, er, gone through some changes here that you've missed.” “Bigger than the damn hole in the damn sky?” “A little bigger,” Gild admitted. “So the governance of the country has switched from the Tamari to the Faldari-Tellasari Alliance, there's the threat of civil war, some political assassinations, we've identified some members of the council of Woden who were responsible for the Separation, The Middle Station crashed out of the Void, The Black River is a stable wormhole, the ships that flew out of the Megaportal are in fact creatures we call Retts, we've got a pilot alive but stranded on the other side, and a kid from Jihalar Kan has spirit-travelled to the Retts' world.” he looked to his comrades. “Did I leave anything out?” Lorn, Augun, Sinequoni, and Bolensperi all shook their heads. Talous was silent for a while. “The most exciting thing I was expecting on this patrol was a game of cards.”

WiP excerpt

But then he started seeing these creatures, these formerly human creatures, who were, well, definitely not human any more. He tried to see their humanity – he supposed he owned them that much – but their bodies were shrunken and twisted, their hands and feet more like paws, and their faces...It wasn't so much their ratty features that bothered him, but the look in their peppercorn eyes. There was nothing behind them. No sign of intelligence, just blankness. He had seen it before (or so he thought) in the eyes of the addicts that gathered in the doorways and street corners he passed on his way home from the night shift at the station. As much as he hated to admit it, the way their gazes were null and void somehow erased their humanity. It gave him shivers. How easy it was to lose it. How much it took to gain it. Hundreds of years of human civilisation, gone in an instant. Then again, he argued, that civilisation had only been won through the ruthless exploitation of others. Others, like himself. The cost of western civilisation had almost entirely been met by the people who never profited from it. People like himself. People who had never really been properly human, however “civilised” that society thought itself to be.
