hey, this is incredibly random, but. like a year ago or whatever you left a comment on a video of a guy doing an art piece that involved celtic knotwork mentioning a desire to learn how to do it. that post has locked replies, so, i am sending this ask. if you want to learn celtic knotwork (and other motifs like key patterns and lettering in the celtic illuminated style), you should pick up a copy of george bain's methods of construction. it's an absolutely essential, definitive text on the subject, and a complete goldmine of accessible, practical, and very well researched information. you would be unlikely to find anyone today doing knotwork art who did not learn from george bain's work.

George Bain, (1881–1968), born in Scrabster in Caithness, Scotland, was an artist and art teacher who made an important and influential contribution to the revival of interest in Celtic and Insular art which began in the 19th century.

Halloween's over, but we've still got skeletons in our cupboards!

Over the past few weeks we've been lucky enough to have been working with Jamie Mackinnon, a student on the St. Andrew's Museum and Gallery Studies course. He's been cataloguing our works on paper and found these brilliant anatomical studies whilst documenting the collection.

  Nineteen year-old George Bain created these anatomical studies in 1901 as a part of his assessment at the Trustee’s Academy, the precursor to Edinburgh College of Art. Featuring the same pose in both works, these drawings were maybe an exercise in visualising different elements of human form using the Academy’s impressive collection of plaster casts – a collection that still belongs to the ECA today.

  Bain went on to become a key figure in the revival of Celtic art in the 20th century. In his post as Principal Art Teacher at Kirkcaldy high School, he studied the mathematical principles and intricate creative elements that characterise Celtic art and passed them on to his students. Also a prolific artist of Celtic designs himself, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy, and further afield in London and Paris. He wrote Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction, which remains the most influential book on the subject and has been in print continuously since 1972.
