What is Beauty? - a short film by Anna Ginsburg

‘Portrait of George Wheeler’ painted in 1910 by Alice Pike Barney (1857-1931). George Wheeler (1842-1905) was a cartographer and explorer who was instrumental in the mapping of the USA here is the library of congress collection of pictures taken on his journeys.

Have you ever heard of a stereoscope? Well, maybe you had a View-Master as a kid? A stereoscope is an early version where you view a card with two images of the same scene, which gives the image a 3D-like effect.

At the National Archives at Riverside, we have a few examples of stereoscopic pictures in our collection. One such series is the “Wheeler Expedition Stereoscopic Photographs, 1871 - ca. 1874.” This Expedition, led by George M. Wheeler, was sent out to create a map of the western part of the United States. They took many great pictures during their travels, and some of these were made into stereoscopic prints with captions. We are sharing a few of these images today, in celebration of World Photography Day. To check out more, this series has been digitized and is available in the National Archives Catalog here.
