So the burst of lovelies from the plan-chest of eternal treasure continues with this set. Hope Street in beautiful Liverpool is a special place full of lively bars and theatres and cafes with with a huge cathedral at each end. I had made a drawing standing in the middle trying to see it all which had a bit of a fisheye lensing effect. I then translated that into this print which was my first reduction cut lino print. (Reduction printmaking is a technical challenge where the same block is printed onto a run of paper, then more is cut away and inked a different colour then printed exactly on top of the first print. This process is repeated for each colour in the image so as errors arise there are never as many finished results as one starts off with because, as the block is cut more and more, earlier stages can never be repeated). I used Oil based inks which caused an unexpected texturing. The register is a little organic, which at the time I didn't want because I was aiming for a more technically "perfect" image, but looking back with more experience now I like the warmth and handmade feel of these prints. I will revisit this subject in further work in the coming year but here I have paired down the original 20 attempts into a run of 10 different but complete versions.
