Suzuki’s first U.S. model was the Samurai, aka the Jimny SJ413 - and it was an instant hit when it debuted in mid-1985; quickly becoming a darling of the 4WD community for its nimble, sure-footed nature and low cost. More than 150K Samurais were sold in the first three years until, in June, 1988, came a fateful Consumer Reports review that suggested the tiny truck was a rollover risk - a claim CR had to disavow after a prolonged court fight. At the time, the Samurai was Suzuki’s only U.S. model, but that fall the Swift (aka Cultus) and Sidekick (aka Escudo) arrived to help. - Early units were imported from Japan but after 1990 the 2-doors were built in Ingersoll, Ontario at CAMI Automotive; a joint venture between #GM and #Suzuki much like the earlier NUMMI JV with Toyota. Suzuki had already supplied GM with the Cultus (the Chevy Sprint) and in 1989 GM launched Chevy’s captive-import label, Geo, with the new Swift/Metro and a version of the Sidekick - the #GeoTracker. 4-doors arrived from Japan in 1991 and were produced at CAMI from 1996. - In many ways the Sidekick was exactly the vehicle American #Suzuki dealers needed, with Samurai sales way down. It had been in the works since 1984 and despite the waning Samurai, the original plan carried on - the Sidekick was a larger, more civilized vehicle Samurai owners could scale up to - but it was still very cheap and aimed at a young audience. The Sidekick/Tracker sold well from the outset. - At first, the #Sidekick came only as a two-door, hardtop or soft just like the Samurai, with either the 1.3L carb’d Samurai four, quickly withdrawn, or a 1.6L G16 injected four, gaining a 16V head in 1994. They were mated to a five-speeder or the ancient GM TH180 automatic. They used the same 4WD system as the Samurai and had a two-speed transfer case and manually locking hubs. They looked like a “soft roader” but had real off-road capability. A perfect successor. - Specifically marketed as “fun cars” for young buyers, many Sidekicks were painted vivid hues and often had #rad graphics like, say, purple stripes and (faded) yellow lettering on “Polynesian Green” (a Geo color) paint with white hardtops. This one is from 1995. https://www.instagram.com/p/BtOVzS_FQPA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fq0i07rmw9o4
