Happy for his new shoes (1946)
In 1946 the U.S. Red Cross sent a humanitarian aid to Austria. Clothing, shoes and other objects loaded in a car were handed over to one of Austrian children houses.
Life Magazine photographer Gerald Waller immediately noticed the 6-year-old boy named Werfel. The Austrian child had hold tight the shoes given to him, and could not conceal his happiness.

“Aşkı çıkarırsan ne kalır geriye?” diye sordu şair. “Parklar, oyuncaklar, şekerler, meyveler, annem, babam ve öteki şeyler.” dedi çocuk. - Ahmet Ümit - Fotoğraf: Gerald Waller (Aralık 1946’da Avusturya'nın Viyana kentindeki Am Himmel yetimhanesinde yaşayan çocuklara, Amerikan Kızılhaç tarafından yeni kıyafetler ve yeni ayakkabılar hediye edilmişti.
