FORGET ABOUT QUANTSUNG NOT BEING NOTICED. DO WE EVEN MENTION GERKANG?
This cutscene between Geras and Liu Kang is so profound to me for multiple reasons but this shot specifically is so good in terms of storytelling and foreshadowing the growth in Geras as a character.
It is in this moment, once Liu Kang states how grateful he is for Geras taking watch over the hourglass for him, when Geras picks up the jade dragon and states that he was made in Liu Kang's image and that duty is his highest calling.
Geras states this while looking at the jade dragon - both a literal and physical embodiment of the disobedience he took in order to ensure the safety of Liu Kang's vision. Duty is responsibility as much as it is a form of loyalty. When he was underneath Kronika he purely existed as an extension of her will. He certainly had goals and thoughts that were his own, but no actual drive to act upon them within the story outside of his Keeper of Time ending. Now, for the first time in eons, Geras has a family. His opinions and insight are valued and actively sought after, and he is able to have his own autonomy.
So the fact that he secretly stored Liu Kang's Keeper of Time abilities but concealed this information because he knew that Liu Kang would revoke his happiness to protect Earthrealm is so special.
It is an act of defiance done with love.
