The areas around Puerto Varas were settled by immigrants from what is now Germany, and this church, like many of the buildings in the town, is in a style more like that of Germany than of Latin America. Wood was abundant locally, and thus this church, like most houses and many other buildings, was constructed of wood.

This German language text book dates from 1853, but has an inscription from a student - George Griesheimer - who used it in 1875.

German was a common language in Chillicothe until WWI because of the large immigrant population. According to the Ohio Historical Society, by the mid 19th century, over one-third of Chillicothe’s population was German. 

Chillicothe had German-language newspapers, German clubs and singing societies, German-language schools, and German churches. (Sadly, some of the latter kept their records in High German, which few people can read today!)

Happy Feast Day Saint John Neumann

1811-1860 Feast day: January 5 Patronage: Catholic Education St. John Neumann was the first canonized male saint of the United States. He has proclaimed the model and patron for all the faithful. He introduced the Forty Hours devotion and laid the foundation for the Catholic school system in this country and also founded a religious community of nuns.

German immigrants have flavoured American culture like cinnamon in an Apfelkuchen. They imported Christmas trees and Easter bunnies and gave America a taste for pretzels, hot dogs, bratwursts and sauerkraut. They built big Lutheran churches wherever they went. Germans in Wisconsin launched America’s first kindergarten and set up Turnvereine, or gymnastics clubs, in Milwaukee, Cincinnati and other cities.
