The ‘80s. The ‘90s. My Two Decades of Music. One Song At A Time.
It’s obvious by now that I am child of the ‘80s and an adult of the ‘90s. Those two decades dominate my consciousness and formed my character more than any other period in my life. The music? Forgive the pun, but it was instrumental to many of my preferences and decisions, from English major (I was a lyrics and lit freak), to my career (first as music researcher/copywriter/copy editor/video producer, then as teacher). Tears for Fears (80s) and Pearl Jam (90s) are my ultimate icons, personal, creative, and professional anchors, but other songs came and went and did leave their mark (and of course TFF and PJ will appear here as well, how can they not?).This self-indulgent series is my tribute to the music of these two decades, the artists, the era, and how I fit into the picture.

To this day, I don’t know what this song is about. I just love the deep, dark bass beats, the sweeping synth, and the fact that it is one of the few female-fronted acts of the ‘80s. This is also a staple, along with Nena’s 99 Luft Balloons, in our class parties (oh yes we love to party). None of us in the band could hope to cover this. It simply was too difficult all around so we just played the cassette tape over and over again.
Some music transports you straight to a time & place.
For me, the place is Germany in 1984.
