Gerry Morgan - 180 Drums podcast

Gerry Morgan: I first ran into Niall – we hung out after an LA gig of James [Bay]'s, after his first record came out we were doing a show in LA and Niall came down with a few friends and we hung out and chatted and got on very well and kept in contact. He came to another couple of gigs, he came to some Nashville shows, we did a couple of nights at the Ryman and he came down, I think he was in town working with Jacquire King, making his record, which is called Flicker, which is out at the moment. So yeah, we just kept in contact, and when the time came and he wanted to go out and do his solo thing, he was moving away from his previous One Direction career and wanted to make a go of it himself, I was asked to do musical direction and also put the band around him. I took on many different roles, we had a great time. The first time I heard one of his tracks I was driving – a car, believe it or not, and it came on the radio – it was called This Town, and I pulled over on the side of the road and I remember listening to it and I went – that is a beautiful song. And I kept on listening and at the end the DJ went, in usual DJ fashion, 'and that was a little song by Niall Horan', and I just texted him and said, 'This Town, I didn't realise that was you, that's a beautiful song and singing'. And yeah, it was a very innocent – not innocent, that's the wrong word, there was a very pure and authentic style of writing there that I really loved from a songwriter that kind of really ticked all of the boxes for me.

So yeah, I met him, we did a lot of stuff just the two of us, went out and did a lot of shows, a lot of promo runs and such, some studio stuff, and we had a really great time I'd jump at doing [anything with him again...] and drums and percussion, and then when it came time to put together a tour band, I of course just gathered [a band] that would represent his sound and his songs the best, and also were nice chaps off the stage, and on. So I put a band together for Niall, and it sounded great, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. I keep – even though I'm on tour with a different artist, James, I still keep an eye on their shows via YouTube and Instagram, and it sounds fantastic – as you saw, the other night.

Interviewer: Yeah, it was just such a refreshing show, from an artist like that. Yeah I think using the words you had mentioned – pure and authentic. Just like his melodic songwriting ideas were so refreshing and it was so – yeah, a lot of it was just very new to me, a lot of melodies I've heard before or heard variations of, and that's cool too, a lot of my favourite music isn't necessarily brand-spanking new ideas, a lot of my favourite music is, but there's still a lot of great music that has been done or has been adapted – but Niall's stuff was really cool and really refreshing to hear.

Gerry Morgan: Yeah, you get a lot of flavours from the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, and this is all stuff which resonates with me as well, so musically we had a lot in common, and personally we get on like – we get on like a house on fire, when we were touring yeah it was really good fun. And also I was just really super-excited to represent him – I was excited because he was coming from such a pop background, like boy band vocal group pop to becoming a legit singer-songwriter, standing up there fronting his own band, with a guitar and a great voice, and he's Irish as well, and I was just really proud and excited for people to hear what he was going to come out with – because I knew what he was going to come out with, and it was legit, and I just thought that people – other musicians and friends of mine were dubious because of maybe where he had come from, but I was like – nah, wait until you hear this. And the record has done so well, and I'm super proud of him, and yeah, fair play.

Interviewer: You mentioned people were dubious about where he was from – was that being that he was Irish or that certain people might not believe in him because he was from a certain neighbourhood or background?

Gerry Morgan: No, no, I'm not talking about geographically or culturally or socially or whatever, I'm talking about maybe other purists are you know – I would say I know some musical snobs and some musician snobs and people who'd be like – ah, no, he came from that boy band pop, he can't be being a legit artist, and you know – he is a legit artist, because all through that time he was just listening to the greats, and crafting – you know, he was listening to quality songwriters and people with good craft, and he was exploring and wanting to do his own version of that, and that's what he's doing.

Interviewer: OK, that's what you meant, very cool. And second thing – you mentioned the term you were MDing for him a while back. So everybody uses that term slightly differently, so just in the sake of clarification for listeners, because I know every time someone uses the term MD it looks differently to the next guy who's MDing – so to you, out with Niall, what did the MD role look like for you?

Gerry Morgan: Well I suppose, because it's his project and with Niall, it's his time to do his own music and his way he wants to do it, he's leading it, and coming from a very personal and rootsy place, the musical director really isn't there to take any control, to take any creative direction, it's just to suggest, to put a good band around him, rehearse the band, make sure they're tight, that everyone's playing their parts well, that everyone's functional and punctual, and just sort of make sure everything's together and working well like a good machine, and also just sort of guide and help the artist in maybe communicating to other musicians, or communicating an understanding of what he's trying to say, and successfully achieving that, maybe with a bunch of musicians. You're almost like a translator at times, you're almost like an arranger, there's many different hats to it I think, and I suppose there's never one way of describing a musical director role, sometimes, like for the likes of him, it could have been arranging a cover or arranging a version for a radio special, creating a setlist, looking at the programming side of things for the likes of playback, picking the right musicians, being there to support him on the road, and also going to the radio stations with him, supporting him there, playing whatever he needs me to play, just to be kind of his right hand man, that's what I did in my time with Niall.

Face time in the bath

You eased yourself in the bath, glass of wine in your hand and tunes playing from your phone. You absolutely ached from spinning class tonight. Just then the music stopped and your phone started ringing. You dried your hand off and grabbed it realising it was face time from Niall. You and Niall had been friends for over a year now, you got on really well and he was one of your closest friends, you flirted a lot and had great banter but it never went any further. You'd thought about it though. It was difficult not to. He was gorgeous.

Checking you had enough bubbles covering the appropriate places you answered.

"Hi Niall! You ok?"

"Hi Emma, woah are you in the bath?!" He asked.

"Ha! Yes, I've been spinning tonight and I thought I was going to die! I ache so much!"

Just then you heard Gerry in the background. "Is Emma in the bath on face time? Dirty minx!"

Suddenly he's behind Niall waving at you.

"Hey there's my favourite Irishman! How are you babe?" You asked.

"Good thanks lovely, expertly placed bubbles there!" He laughed walking away. "I'll leave you two alone!". You heard a door shut in the background and you realised Niall was now alone.

"Hang on a minute, favourite Irishman?" asked Niall." I thought I was your favourite?" He almost sounded a bit upset.

"Oh you are sometimes Niall! But you've not done any crazy snapchats to me today like Gerry so he is!" You replied laughing.

"I'll soon change that" he said "cheeky mare! Expect some nudes!"

"Did you want something Niall?" You asked sipping your wine laughing at him.

"Have you got wine to?" He questioned.

"Yes why?"

"You on your own? I'm not interrupting anything am I?" He asked looking a bit worried.

"Yes I'm on my own, fucking hell like I'd answer the phone if I had a guy in here with me!" You laughed so much the water and bubbles splashed about. "Niall I've not been on a date in over a year! Ha!"

You check the bubble placement again making sure you were covered.

"Think I'll make you laugh again" he said a cheeky smirk appearing on his face. "Makes the bubbles move around! Nice tits by the way!"

"Fuck!" You said trying to hold the phone at a different angle whilst moving the bubbles around.

He was absolutely howling with laughter now. That gorgeous laugh he does that makes you laugh to, it was infectious.

"Sorry!" He said still laughing "can't even remember why I called now. Far too distracted by your great rack!"

"Ha ha! You dirty bastard, you keep your dirty thoughts about my tits to yourself!"

"Ha! I've had plenty of dirty thoughts about them before don't you worry!"

"Niall!"

"What? You think I didn't notice them in that little black bikini in Ibiza last month?!"

A group of you had all gone away for a long weekend when Niall had had a break from recording and the weather had been hot so a bikini was an obvious choice. You hadn't even thought he'd have been checking you out.  Yeah you'd spent time alone together by the pool and you'd stayed up late one night chatting in a hammock cuddling up to each other but you had pushed any romantic thoughts out your head long ago.

"I spent the whole time we were cuddling in that hammock looking down your top!"

"Are you fucking serious?!" You asked him smiling, your mouth open in shock. "You were perving at them then?! Jesus Niall!" Now you were laughing and the bubbles and water in the bath were moving so much you knew you'd lost all modesty. You held your phone up higher so only your face was in view. 

"You get the privilege of just looking at my double chin now!" You smiled.

"Oh go on give us another look" he asked. "Pretty please" and did a little pouty face. 

"No way, we are friends and while I'm firmly stuck in the friend zone with you you're getting nothing but this double chin!" You then attempted to make your double chin even bigger whilst laughing hysterically.

"Woah I never stuck you in the friend zone you put yourself there." He said staring at me with his piercing blue eyes. "Why would I put you in the friend zone when I'm crazy about you? I'd be in the bath with you now if I could."

You didn't know what to say, your double chin thing seemed stupid now. You sat up in the bath now making sure to keep your phone above your chest.

"Are you shitting with me?" You questioned him. You didn't know what else to say. Was he being serious, if he was joking you'd look ridiculous if you said how you felt.

"No Emma I'm not, I thought you knew I liked you. Everyone else knows, they take the piss all the time. Do you not want to, I mean do you like me to or have I got this completely random conversation wrong?" He asked, looking at you like he was scared of the answer.

"Niall I haven't been on a date with anyone in over a year because of you. Yes I like you. I always have."

"Really wish we weren't having this conversation over face time!" He said laughing nervously running his hands through his hair.

You both stayed silent for a minute just looking at each other and laughing.

"Why did you call anyway? Can you remember or are you still distracted by my tits?!" You said laughing nervously. You hadn't expected this conversation to go the way it had. It suddenly dawned on you how far away he was. Him in LA you in London. He wasn't due home for two weeks. "

"Um I called about golf actually."

"Golf?"

"Yeah there's a charity dinner in a 5 days time and I wondered if you wanted to come over here to LA to go with me. They called me earlier to ask who my plus one was and I told them you. So do you want to come and stay with me for a couple of weeks. I can get you a flight tomorrow night if you want? Or have I just made this incredibly awkward by telling you how much I've fallen for you?"

He was rambling now, his nerves getting the better of him, you could hear him doing his breathing exercises for when he gets nervous.

"I'd love to come over to LA with you but....... "

"Ah there's a but......"

"I expect you in the bath when I get there" you said winking at him.

"I'm sure I could manage that" he replied his cheeks blushing.
