Musical Monday

Happy New Year! After a week hiatus to end 2015, I am back for a fun-filled 2016 complete with the weekly posts, and plenty of show reviews to keep you entertained, informed, and excited about upcoming theatre. This week I would like to pay tribute to one of the eight musicals that have won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Most people think that musicals are just fluffy, fun, and bouncy forms of entertainment, but some musicals have risen above that stereotype and have taken home the award. Most of the Pulitzer winners have already been highlighted in previous Musical Mondays, (A Chorus Line, How To Succeed..., Next To Normal, South Pacific, Fiorello!, and Rent) however two have not. This week I bring one of them to you. Happy Musical Monday!

Musical: Of Thee I Sing

Book, Music, and Lyrics: George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, George Gershwin, and Ira Gershwin

Broadway Run: ORIGINAL CAST= December 26, 1931- January 14, 1933

                            1ST REVIVAL CAST= May 15, 1933 - June 10, 1933

                            2ND REVIVAL CAST= May 5, 1952 - July 5, 1952

Awards Won: ORIGINAL CAST= Pulitzer Prize for Drama

                        1ST REVIVAL CAST= None

                        2ND REVIVAL CAST= None

Other: There was a 1972 TV Movie of the same name featuring Carroll O'Connor (John P. Wintergreen), Cloris Leachman (Mary Turner), Jack Gilford (Alexander Throttlebottom) and Michele Lee (Diana Devereaux).

Fun Fact: Of Thee I Sing was the first of two Pulitzer Prizes for George S. Kaufman; he would go on to win another for You Can't Take It With You.

There is your dose of Pulitzer Prize action with love to the musicals of Broadway history. There is still one other musical I have yet to highlight, which will be next week's post. Although Of Thee I Sing has fallen into musical obscurity, for the most part, every once in awhile this title pops up in some theatre company's season. I know I'll be on the lookout for it. Go see a show!

She stared with #fredastaire in #thebandwagon on broadway and for 27 years doing vaudeville from the age of 8. Alas in 1932 she retired to marry the second son of the 9th #dukeofdevonshire and moved to Ireland residing at #lismorecastle til his death after 12 years of marriage.
