I just want to take a moment to promo GetBullish and the Bullish Conference.
GetBullish is a community run by Jen Dziura centered around ‘aggressive lady-advice.’ If you are at all interested in (among other career-related issues): business, social justice in the workplace, feminism, and career advice from someone who runs businesses about stuff other than giving people career advice, you should definitely check out GetBullish.
If you can go, I cannot recommend the Bullish Conference enough. (It’ll be at the Embassy Row in Washington, DC this year, November 2nd - 5th, and I am so looking forward to attending meetings in ‘The Situation Room‘.) I’ve been to the last two (in NYC and Palm Springs), and they were both delightful. My favorite topic is one that was covered at the NYC conference - using story-telling to craft an elevator pitch. (Hillary Rea of Tell Me A Story gave this particular talk.) I don’t enjoy talking a lot about myself (introvertedness + a touch of social anxiety = ‘but must we talk about me, because I don’t really think we must’), but this method has confidence and passion built in, and it’s really made it easier to talk about the things I do.
I’ll leave you with this description from the Bullish Conference website:
A CAREER CONFERENCE FOR FEMINISTS WHO WANT TO MAKE THE WORLD AND THE WORKPLACE BETTER
Come to the 5th annual BullCon, where there is no reason you can't have a roundtable on sexism in the workplace followed by champagne. Literally none.
(Seriously - if you can, go.)

If you are a New Yorker, you know how annoying it is when someone is walking too slowly. The sidewalks are crowded; the subway stairs are crowded. It’s like someone driving 45 on the highway. One p…
