Ain’t nothing better than #PAYDAY. Whoever said that money can’t buy happiness missed out on the fact that money does actually fulfill the lower rungs of Maslow’s hierarchy. It can in some instances buy opportunities out of a life that would otherwise have limited options for self-improvement; it can get you out of a dishevelled, egregiously restrictive place. It can buy that temporary high through a series of high-spending splurges (without the impending credit anxiety). It can buy the experience you seek which will make you richer than anyone else - thanks to that glorious story about the time you went bungee-jumping, which you can now tell at every party. It can buy comfort and assurance. None of these things are happiness, but they get you closer.
Slum Village, together with co-writers J.Dilla and Baatin, knew about the universal relevance of the triumph of getting paid when they wrote the original version of this classic rap piece way back in 2000. They dedicated it to the “people out here getting bank”. Now, German producer FloFilz has put his own spin on the song with some delicious piano samples, throwing it back to the jazz vibes from the original sample from Herbie Hancock’s Come Running to Me. Want more? Try Tom Misch & Jordan Rakei’s similarly chilled out version, which apparently took just 4 hours to make.
Disclaimer: This has zero connection with the fact that it’s Lunar New Year and its associated tradition of giving out (receiving) red packets filled with cash. But still, lets celebrate the holidays with mon-eh, err’day, err’day.
