It’s difficult to live in Saskatchewan. I don’t think anyone will deny that. Winters are long, cold, dark and harsh. The colour green is only present on our coniferous trees and shrubs; and even then, the bits we see are usually peeking out from underneath a layer of frost and snow. Every year, I have to remind myself that our winters are building my character… making me a better person (Right? Right!?!?!)
By the time May arrives, I can barely wait to get into the garden. You know that feeling when you’re 10 minutes from home and have to pee? Like you can’t wait a minute longer, but you do (because you have to)? It’s a similar feeling… kind of.
And Saskatchewan did not disappoint this May long weekend. It provided gardeners with one full day of sun and another day of warm, overcast weather to start rekindling their summer-long love affairs with their yards; each person remembering, like it was just yesterday, that feeling of soil between their fingers and the strength of hearts and spades. And then, on the last day of our long weekend, the day when Canada honours Queen Victoria (Britain's longest-reigning monarch), we were fittingly presented with a long-rain, which allowed us to quench our thirst and take a rest from our whirlwind romance.
To top it all off, the forecast for the rest of this week is sunny with temperatures in the low-mid 20s. So I suppose, after months of waiting, summer may finally be here! Although, considering we had snow just a couple of weeks ago, I think we might have missed spring?
