Should you get a puppy after the death of a spouse?

Not a decision to enter into lightly but definitely something to consider.

The common rule you hear after your spouse dies is to wait at least one year before making any major decisions.  Moving from your home or leaving a job would have been a major decision for me.  Luckily I was able to stay in my home and keep my job so that consistency was beneficial.
