GN-001 Getting Noticed Good Looking Gifs
The key to posting a good looking gif is file size. Gifs should be lower than 3MB. Anything larger and they may not animate or look overly compressed. Here are a few tips for posting good looking gifs without the compromise.
When posting external gifs
Use a link
If you’re posting a gif from another site, copy and paste a link to the gif instead of manually uploading it. Tumblr will convert the link into a gif.
Use the gif library
Tumblr has a massive gif library where you can find popular gifs and put them in your post. To open the gif library, click the GIF icon in your post.

When posting original gifs
Keep it to 30 frames
Depending on the dimensions of your gif, 30 frames is the max before you start going over 3MB. Try removing every other frame until you’re happy with the file size and the smoothness.
Uploading a GIF that’s already compressed? It can be up to 5MB.
Feeling adventurous? You can upload an uncompressed GIF that’s 10MB or less, but Tumblr will kindly take the reins and compress the GIF for you if needed.
Use the app gif creator
If you’re converting a video into a gif, use the gif creator. You don’t have to add any effects. Just trim your video, skip the fillers, and post. Tumblr automatically optimizes it.
Shrink it to 540 pixels
Images on the dashboard display at a maximum 540px wide. Most people will come across your gifs on their dashboard. So instead of compromising on frames or colors, scale down the width to reduce the file size.
