INFORMATION: “Sometimes, the mysterious and abstract qualities of Neusüss’s work are the result of natural forces, as in the Gewitterbild (Lightning picture) images, part of the Nachtstücke (Night pieces) series (1984). The first Gewitterbilder were made by placing photographic paper in a garden at night during a thunderstorm, and letting ligthing expose the paper. Later works were made without lighting; instead, an electronic flash was fired at the paper, often from several different angles. The orientation of the paper in the undergrowth was haphazard, so the final composition could be decided after the event.“
