What are your favourite Brio moments from each season?
SEASON 1
3. "what me and you had is done. over" (1.09).
forever obsessed with the fact that rio treats firing beth more like breaking up with her and that it takes them four seasons to acknowledge that they have a "relationship."
2. "what are you doing with someone like me?" (1.05).
the genuine curiosity! the impish delight! beth's absolute mortification because she knows it's more than a job to her—and that he knows. *chef's kiss*
"this stuff's medieval, darlin'" (1.10).
literally rio utilizing this moment to touch beth tenderly for the first time and the way that she lets him all while her husband is watching, tied up and beaten? while rio's bloody and honey-tongued? a;sdkfjk;lawj;ela
SEASON 2
3. bathroom break (2.04).
perfect episode from start to finish, WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY EXCEPT THAT THIS MOMENT LIVES RENT-FREE IN ALL OF OUR HEADS FOREVER?
2. "my daughter needed something in that car!" (2.07).
which is why it's incredible that anything tops it, but he! showed! he! genuinely! cares! for! her! it's not just attraction or lust or games! he told her she was wrong and yelled at her and shamed her, but he couldn't stop himself from checking, and worse, he couldn't stop himself from taking the blanket and packing it up and giving it back to her. AND HE COULDN'T LOOK AT HER FACE WHEN HE DID IT.
the kiss (2.09).
the absolutely perfect blend of their toxic obsession and genuine tenderness for and vulnerability with each other undercut by the fact that it's still just a little bit of a game for him and she's planning to blow the whole thing up 10 seconds later. BUT SHE COULDN'T NOT SAY GOODBYEEEEE.
SEASON 3
3. "i'll do anything" / "anything, huh?" (3.08).
it was a toss-up between this moment and "next time empty the clip" but although the latter shifted the fandom in one single scene after a season of complaining and set us up good for the hiatus, this moment carries more weight for me when you include it's parallels. beth dressing up for rio noticeably starts in 2.05 and is continued in 4.07, but it's made even more perfect by being juxtaposed to how she has to be asked to dress up by dean, and how she dresses up entirely differently for fitzpatrick. there's this thread of beth feeling good on her own terms in a genuine way for rio, and rio responding to it, contrasted against fitting into this mold for other people. and that's what makes beth and rio so compelling to me. even at their worst, there's still this unbreakable thread that they respond to in each other. and i think this moment carries weight that beth only really dresses up for rio genuinely, so even though she's playing him, i think it's an early sign that her feelings are more complicated than she says they are at this juncture of time.
2. "so what comes next?" / "nothing good" (3.04).
never, ever going to be over beth trusting him enough to show up alone at his bar in the middle of the night when he has every reason for kill her—and rio knowing he has every reason to, but needing to take that shot for liquid courage.
"you, me, we—it's just business" (3.06).
this lie is so insane because there's no way the two of them would even be having this conversation if it were just business. they hate each other so much at this moment, but the hurt that is so viscerally raw here underscores that it's because they are so, so much more than business—and always will be.
SEASON 4
3. "if i have to make one more cookie, i will die" (4.07).
what can i say? christina and manny always nail these complicated, tender, angsty, nuanced scenes, and the fact that beth's telling the truth but doing it in service of a lie to manipulate rio into doing her bidding? the way rio responds to that truth-in-a-lie because it's who he wants to see beth as? because he still wants, more than anything, to drag her down into the dirt with him and get her hands dirty? but the way he's still offering, just like he did with the baby drug dealers, to take care of it for her so she doesn't have to? they're a contradiction, your honor, and i love them for it.
2. "gotta know if you're good enough" / "for you?" (4.06).
my heart still beats funny when i think of this scene and everything in it.
"i told you, you didn't need him" (4.14).
THE DUBBY REDUX!!!!!!! EXCEPT!!!!!!! THIS TIME RIO GIVES BETH BACK MONEY? HE LOVES MONEY! AND THIS TIME HE'S JUST TELLING HER HE BELIEVES IN HER? TO HER FACE?!!!!! AND SHE'S CONFUSED AND FLATTERED AND TOUCHED ALL IN ONE??? AND SHE HAS TO ASK HIM BECAUSE SHE HAS TO KNOW WHY HE GAVE HER ALL HER STUFF BACK (READ: KEPT IT) AND RIO AVOIDS IT BUT ALSO BASICALLY CONFESSES HIS TRUE FEELINGS TO HER? this is why s4 makes me insane.
