while compiling my screenshots for favorite location, i noticed for the first time that in the scene where beth is being haunted by the thought of betraying rio in 4.06, her kids are playing with toy guns in the background. it stuck out to me because it seemed somewhat unusual, even random in this strange dream sequence.

then i remembered - it's exactly what they were doing when beth originally pitched turning rio into the feds in 1.09. there, the girls were playing princesses while the boys were shooting them with bubble guns, and it's supposed to serve as a trigger for and complement to beth's (garbled) fairy tale morality speech about how they're the good guys and rio's the one that deserves to go away.

but it's also what they were doing in 3.10 at the park when she thought the hit was successful with jane and emma insisting that the other is dead - acting as a point of irony or tongue-in-cheek humor about the kids' make-believe game and the very real death that their mom and aunts think they've just orchestrated.

linked all together though, i think there's a subtle thread that it's not just this potential betrayal that's weighing heavily on beth, but all of them.

it's even more interesting, too, that the trigger point for the first betrayal is rio setting beth up as a test to see if she'll talk to the cops when the parallel culmination is beth using her relationship with the secret service to ultimately protect rio and keep him safe.
