The Letter.
“Hey! Message for you, sir!” a courier called out as he ran up. “Jackary Chaoti, correct??”
“Y’ask me that every time, ‘m still th’ only Mage ‘round with green stripes in m’ hair.” Jack teased with a grin, his eyebrow lofted. It took a moment for the mail deliver boy to stop and stare, the First Mate was very well cleaned up, shaven, groomed and in fine silks adorning the colours of the sunset and sunrise. “What’s with th’ look? Do I look okay?”
“Y-You look good sir!” the boy chirped in surprise, handing over a thick, stuffed envelope. “H-Have a good day!”
Taking the letter, Jack watched the boy leave before he grinned and shook his head, glancing down at the writing, however eyebrows easily creased the moment he saw the writing. It smelled of his Captain. Quick to flick open the letter, another two pages poured out and he held them aside, reading the initial one to himself first.
Jack,
This was sent to me along with a bribe of 600gold. I sent it back and told him he had a head start. Happy hunting. Let me know if you need help. Otherwise all I know, he was at the docks looking for you. Information regarding your sister.
~ Kurel
“Sister...?” he blinked, huffing under his breath as he grinned a moment. Kurel had just thrown someone under the boss and was offering to help Jack hunt this person? Who could have possibly been stupid enough that the Captain was unleashing his dragon? Fingers unfolded the other letters attached together, eyes scanning over a hauntingly familiar writing.
Captain Kurel,
I wish to apologize if I caused you any sort of inconvenience. I hauled the lumber you asked of me, and got as much of the rubble cleared as I could, but after some time to myself to think, I feel it would be too dangerous for me to approach Jackary. He hates me, and I would prefer not to have him shift and kill me in the midst of your crew, or the place you are trying to repair so... if it is all the same, please... do not tell him you saw me.
Jackary narrowed his eyes slowly at the writing before he slowly pulled the second page from under the first to settle it on top, eyes scanning the rest of the note.
I am enclosing a donation to your cause. I wish you luck in your endeavors... Please... do not tell Jack you saw me. Just... act as if I were not even there.
Sincerely,
S. Sunbrand.
Pupils constricted into nothing more than thin slits, fangs bared before fingers dug firmly into the letter, crumpling the paper before frost overpowered the parchment in boiling rage.
