Success Story: Supporting a Construction Project with End-to-End Logistics
By EUGENIA EYRAM OPEKU
Every logistics professional has that one project they remember—not because it was the biggest or flashiest, but because it tested every part of what we do. For us at PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, one such moment came not long ago, when we were tapped to support the logistics for a major construction project just outside Kumasi.
At first glance, it seemed straightforward: move equipment, building materials, and pre-fab units from the port to the site. But as always, the real story lives in the details.
And in logistics, details make or break success.
The Ask: Full-Scope Logistics for a Tight Timeline
The client—a multinational firm building a regional office and training centre—needed more than transport. They needed a logistics partner, not just a service provider.
Their ask included:
Receiving oversized machinery at Tema Port
Coordinating customs clearance for sensitive materials
Transporting hundreds of tons of steel, concrete additives, and prefab wall panels
Scheduling deliveries according to the contractor’s build phases
Managing short-term warehouse space for buffer stock
Handling returns of unused goods and packaging materials
And, of course, all of this needed to happen under a tight build schedule, with almost no room for delays.
Our Approach: Planning Before Movement
We knew from the outset that this job required precision. So before we even moved the first container, we sat down with the client’s procurement and site managers to map it all out.
Together, we created a delivery calendar that aligned with their build sequence. That helped us:
Avoid overloading the site with too much material
Prioritize urgent shipments (e.g. scaffolding and structural frames)
Phase transport based on real-time construction progress
We also established an off-site warehouse hub near Nkawkaw to hold incoming stock. This became a buffer zone—materials could be staged there, then released just-in-time for use on site.
It sounds simple now, but that calendar? It changed a lot. Weather, shipment delays, supplier issues—all the usual suspects came knocking. But with a real plan in place, we could adjust without collapsing the whole timeline.
The Challenges We Faced
Every logistics story has bumps, and this one was no exception.
One shipment—a set of modular rooftop panels—was held up in customs due to HS code discrepancies. A minor misclassification triggered a verification request, and the clock started ticking.
Because we’d pre-cleared most of the shipment and had a close working relationship with port officials, we were able to resolve the issue in under 48 hours. No extra charges. No delay to site work. But it was a reminder—even one small misstep in documentation can snowball fast.
Another hurdle? The final mile. The construction site was down a narrow, partially paved access road. Our standard flatbed trucks couldn’t get through with full loads.
So we pivoted. Switched to smaller-capacity, higher-clearance vehicles for the last stretch. Slower, yes—but more reliable. No point rushing if the load can’t arrive intact.
Why This Project Mattered
It wasn’t just about the freight. It was about supporting a larger mission—helping a major infrastructure investment come to life in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
From steel beams to screws, our role was to make sure every piece of that site had what it needed, when it was needed.
And it reminded us that end-to-end logistics isn’t just a service—it’s a commitment. A constant balancing act of cost, time, safety, and coordination. You’re not just delivering goods. You’re delivering progress.
A Glimpse Into the Bigger Picture
This project also showed us how local logistics providers can rise to global standards. That’s part of the reason we’re proud that PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED is a nominee at the upcoming 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council in London this November.
It’s not just about the award. It’s about joining a global conversation—with companies from around the world—on how to build better trade, better infrastructure, and more resilient supply chains in a world that’s changing fast.
This construction project, in a way, represents what’s possible when the pieces come together. When logistics is seen as a strategic partner—not just a back-office function.
Final Thought
Construction logistics isn’t always glamorous. You’re hauling rebar at 5 a.m., dodging potholes, coordinating forklifts with cranes. But when the building finally stands—solid, on schedule—you realize your work mattered.
At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we don’t just move shipments. We move milestones.
And if that means one more early morning at the port, or one more unplanned detour on a muddy road—we’re ready.
