mimics are monsters in this story!! the most standard ones look like this: ((heres my original post for this art btw))

theyre terrible litte monsters, ranging in size from as small as a rat to as big as your average dog. only the lesser ones though (cause theres more types)

SO. starting from the bottom. mimics are a type of monster that isnt alive. more specifically, theyre constructs. This means that they’re not “alive” per se as they dont have a soul of their own or a conscience, and like most other beings of that type they just follow the directive theyre created for. However, unlike most other constructs these are able to multiply, and their creator disappeared a very long time ago so any hope of undoing them permanently is gone. 

[uhh some context. theres 2 types of ‘beings’ in the world: those who have souls, and those who dont (the constructs). The latter ones are all of artificial origin, meaning they were made by someone else for a definite purpose, and usually to serve as help or some kind of tool.]

so yeah w that out of the way. heres a shameless copy & paste of info of mimics that i wrote a buncha time ago under the cut: 

theres a lot of kinds of mimics, i haven’t rly thought abt all of them tbh but i know theres at least 2 major kinds: lesser mimics (the most common) and greater mimics (least common).

all kinds of mimics are soulless constructs who’s only purpose (so far at least) is to destroy and reproduce. 

anyways.

lesser mimics act as basically parasites. they either latch onto a recently dead corpse or outright kill someone and latch onto them. the victim dies, and the mimic brings them back to life, perfectly or almost perfectly imitating the person/animal that it was before, and goes around basically becoming the victim. but the victim is no longer themself, they have lost their life, their soul, etc and are basically just a walking imitation.

the mimic stays in this stage for as long as it needs, and uses the body to as an incubator, it divides its original core into 2 to 4 fragments, all of which will become new mimics. 

on rare occasions, the lesser mimic enters a different stage instead of dividing and becomes a greater mimic, but this process takes a lot more time to complete than the usual division process.

a mimic will use any material available at the time of hatching to make itself a body. this is why a lot of them look like weird skinned animals, they used the body of their previous host to make a body. 

on occasion a body will not be able to provide enough material for every core in it, so the one(s) left bare will need to grab a hold of ne next available thing, giving birth to mimics made out of wood, stone or other stuff 

it is practically impossible to know who is a mimic and who isn’t without the aid of magic or some other garbage, as personalities/memories/relationships are kept if the person is affected (even if its no longer them). If an affected person shows any sign that its not them and that they’re “becoming something else” then its already too late to stop the hatching process and you have to call in the hunters to get rid of the menace as soon as possible.

((note: newly formed mimics can’t infect people, they gotta flee for a while))

now greater mimics are much more dangerous. they don’t affect people or creatures directly, and they don’t need a host. instead they do the traditional thing, and they mimic whatever is necessary to hunt their prey (forms, voices, even whole environments if the mimic is powerful enough, but this is ultra rare)

you could be hunting a certain kind of monster that you prepared for and then AHH suddenly its a mimic and you have no idea how to deal w it. you’re not prepared for it either. you die.

and thats most of what i got on mimics atm lmao

in summary; theyre monsters that infect people and bring them back to life so they can fuck shit up afterwards, and theyre a big menace because they multiply easily and no one can stop them definitively
