clint  can’t  remember  how  long  it’s  been  since  bucky’s  last  nightmare.    NIGHTMARE    . . .    that  doesn’t  really  do  these  justice,    does  it  ?    people  have  nightmares  all  the  time.    these  are  something  else,    something  with  teeth  and  venom.    clint  wonders,    sometimes,    what  bucky  sees  when  it  happens,    but  he’s  quick  to  perish  the  thought.    the  man  isn’t  some  wounded  animal,    and  clint’s  no  therapist.    what  he  is,    what  he’s  very  good  at  being,    is  just    . . .    there.    he’s  there  in  the  bathroom,    crouching  beside  bucky  as  he  pants  pitifully  into  the  just  -  flushed  toilet  bowl,    there  pulling  back  strings  of  sweat  -  damp  hair  where  they  keep  trying  to  fall  into  bucky’s  face.

he’s  there  when  bucky  tells  him,    in  a  rough  and  quiet  voice  that  just  doesn’t  sound  like  his  bucky  that  clint  deserves  better.    better  than  what  ?    a  guy  who  loves  him  who  survived  the  worst  seventy  years  in  all  of  history  and  has  the  occasional  REALLY  BAD  NIGHT  as  a  result  ?    〝    have  you  met  me  ?    〞    clint  wants  to  tell  him,    if  anything,    it  ought  to  be  the  other  way  around,    but  that’s  not  an  argument  to  have  with  a  man  with  his  head  hovering  over  a  toilet  bowl.    so,    he  swallows  the  rest  down,    and  offers  up  instead,    〝    sorry,    but  you’re  stuck  with  me,    bud.    〞  

in  case  there’s  any  doubt,    clint  settles  onto  a  knee    ―    might  as  well  get  comfy    ―    and  the  hand  not  occupied  with  wrangling  bucky’s  hair  fumbles  for  the  old  mug  he’d  filled  with  tap  water  while  bucky  had  been    . . .    otherwise  occupied.     〝    now,    rinse.    〞

"Uggh," came his response, his back still flat on the ground. That creature had almost gotten the better of him and he could feel where it had actually nicked him. If it weren't for the serum he knew it would take weeks for him to heal. Instead, he'd be healed up by the end of the day or the next if he were lucky. But that wasn't what concerned him. He'd heard Bucky call out to him and opening his eyes he managed to look over at his friend. Yeah, this wasn't something he wanted anyone to find out and Steve knew Bucky wouldn't say anything, but Stark had eyes everywhere and once he found out the rest of the team would, too. Which meant he needed to push himself to his feet. It took him a long moment but once he was on his feet again he looked to see if they managed to take the damn thing down. "I'm fine. We just need to find that thing and put an end to it."

the last he can remember,  he had been at yggdrasill’s roots,  seeking out the norns before beginning his final quest.  whether he found them or not,  he does not know.  he feels as if he’s been tossed into an ocean & cannot figure out which way is up ; he is breathing,  but there’s a disconnect between his brain and his lungs telling him that he isn’t.  lightning sparks at his fingertips,  and he realizes that he’s lost stormbreaker. clouds gather overhead,  blotting out the sun,  as the once mighty thor sinks to the ground,  losing himself to grief and confusion and the overwhelming feeling that the world is spinning at a different angle.  

when he looks up again,  he is not alone. he blinks once,  twice,  then hauls himself to his feet.  he towers over the man in a way he shouldn’t,  but he doesn’t know why.  scratch that ---- he doesn’t care why.  so little matters. 

“ barnes? ”  he asks,  not bothering to frown.  he just looks dazed.  “ where are we? ”

@ghostasset for a happy bucky birthday!

It had taken so much time to figure out, and even more planning to carefully figure which day he could make what phone call and so on. But finally he had managed it. He had managed to call Kate, who was the bigger part of the plan. A plan that, if everything went according to plan. was currently in motion and would ring Bucky’s door bell right about now, just in time for Clint to call.

What should have arrived to Bucky’s place was a pizza delivery, with accompanying flowers and an USB stick. The pizza was already payed for - thanks to Kate. And if they had managed to follow instructions the box lid, when Bucky opened it. would say “Happy Birthday, too bad you’re not turning 69 ; )”

Counting down second before he punched the phone number in Clint was, to say the least. very excited to see how things had managed to turn out.

he could swear those exact words have come out of his own mouth before, and frankly, he doesn’t love getting a taste of his own medicine. honestly, the thought of losing bucky unsettles his stomach, but steve doesn’t want to think about that. sure, it’s a win (relief) that bucky came away from the whole thing relatively unharmed. however, he’d prefer to avoid close calls like that if possible. anyone hurt on his watch, while he’s out there with them, that’s a weight he bears on his shoulders whether he has to or not. and what happens to bucky? well, that’s a little more personal. no, he won’t elaborate. all he knows is his hands aren’t quite steady yet.

“fine, let’s just not make a habit of this, alright? recklessness is my thing, don’t go stealin’ it.”
