our muses!!!
who takes longer showers? - Arthurhow do they make up after a fight? - Merlin won’t apologize bc he knows that if he does first, Arthur won’t feel bad, so they have to wait around until Arthur gets himself together to apologize. Merlin usually rolls his eyes, but then they talk about a bit if needed. and then they hug a lot. and might have sex but usually just if they’re still sort of annoyed with each other to get the frustration out without yelling more and making it worse. that’s how they agree to disagree.who prefers rain and who prefers sun? - Arthur prefers the sun, Merlin prefers the rainwhat’s their favorite place to go together? - into the woods. Arthur likes watching Merlin there, the way that he finds it all so interesting and seems so peaceful. (this could go for either modern or canon)who’s more likely to be voted prom king/queen? - Arthur, to be cliche about itdo they celebrate anniversaries, etc.? - yus, and are both secretly really into itwho’d pressure the other into singing karaoke? - i think they’d both be a little shy to it, unless they got a bit drunk, and then Merlin would be more likely to go for it and make Arthur come up with him the second timewhat’s their nightly routine? - after dinner, they do their own thing for a bit, then Arthur comes over ~all cute~ and asks Merlin if he’s ready for bed. Merlin brushes his teeth while Arthur gets down to his underwear and then Arthur brushes his teeth and Merlin rolls his eyes bc Arthur always gets in the way. but then they snuggle up together and either make-out or talk about life a bit before they fall asleep. who’s more likely to burn dinner? - Arthur, lbr

BBC Merlin was something straight outta a fanfiction anyway and I ain't talking about a well written fic either.
The thing about this show is that the concept is really good. A reimagining of the Arthurian legend with younger characters, geared towards a modern audience. It's great. It's like the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which introduced a lot of people to Pride and Prejudice in a fun, modern way that they could better relate to. Watching a fun adventure story about a young Merlin learning to use his powers and battling with destiny is a lot more entertaining that, say, reading Le Morte D'Arthur. Where it falls apart is that they decided to focus on all the wrong things. I mean for one, they set up a beautiful dystopian society that you never really got to explore because, despite the story being focused on Merlin, who is a peasant, all the focus was pretty much on the royal family. You got glimpses and snatches of it, but that's it. And the lack of character development in several important areas is just awful.
There were so many directions they could've gone with Merlin and they pretty much picked all the worst ones. I would've loved more episodes like The Sorcerer's Shadow, where Gilli actually forces Merlin to question his destiny. Or The Kindness of Strangers, where you get to see a glimpse of the part of the magical community that supports, even worships Emrys. The show needed much less of Merlin the servant and much more of Emrys.
...Well that got a bit out of hand. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I get the impression that there's this whole slew of negativity for the show's writing (which is deserved) without any acknowledgement for the things it did right. I maintain that the creators deserve credit for coming up with this idea in the first place, although their execution was pretty lacking. Honestly, I think that's the reason we all still invest so much in it. Beautiful concept, poor execution. And since fanfiction exists we can just forget the poor execution (for the most part) and create our own stories. I mean it sucks that we have to be the ones to give the characters and the world they live in the depth they deserve, but I also think that's done wonders for keeping the fandom alive. For the most part, the Merlin fandom is pretty nice. At least, the people I talk to are. It's nice that we're all still here and contributing.

Imagine Clara getting Merlin to skive off his duties because they can go adventuring instead possibly even with the Doctor. It wouldn’t take too long for Merlin to agree.
//It'll be fiiiiiiine Merlin we won't be gone long Arthur won't even notice you've left. Time machine, it's totally fine. I'll totally take the blame if he does... and then he doesn't show up until the next morning and she's just like 'gee merlin where have you been the tavern??? pffft
