What did she like about John? Besides his obvious flaws, which she found intriguing, she liked…she liked his competence. He was capable, at least in a large portion of his life. He did not seem so capable in facing his own emotions, which she witnessed as she stalked him for Valentina, but neither was she really.
There was also an easy way about their banter. He rose to the challenge instead of getting pissed off like the few other men she’d tried talking to over the years. John had an ego, yeah, but he also was practically begging for companionship and approval from those around him. Ava didn’t mind that—at least it was something consistent.
And there was vulnerability there too—during their conversations in the desert, in the box truck, even after, before the Void wrecked havoc over the city. The soft broken parts behind his brilliantly blue eyes shined brightly, and they (sometimes) seemed to burn a bit more brightly when they were sparring with words.
