Bastard. “Haha, very funny,” Ava said, rolling her eyes at him where he leaned over the island, elbows grinding into the sharp edge of the countertop. “You know, for some reason I was thinking you could never take off the suit,” John said, eyeing her cozy sweats. Ava arched a sharp eyebrow. “You were thinking about me out of my suit?” John almost blushed. It was adorable. His ears turned red.

Between John and Yelena, they could not stand the silence. They talked about jobs, poking at their skillsets. They avoided traumatic childhoods (Ava and Yelena) or their biggest fuckups (John). It almost felt a bit like camaraderie. By the time they got close enough for Alexei and Bucky to see the city on the horizon, they were going through their favorite fight styles. Yelena started listing off the weapons she had on her person. “And then I have these, Widow zzzt zzzt bite things,” she said, playfully bumping her fists together. “Yeah, I remember,” John said cheerfully, as if getting zapped by continuous volts of electricity was as casual as saying he’d gone fishing. There was something so wrong with him and Ava found herself implicitly compelled to figure out what and why. Every single thing he did or said filled her with an overwhelming amount of curiosity. And she sort of hated it but sort of wanted to see where it took her.

What did she like about John? Besides his obvious flaws, which she found intriguing, she liked…she liked his competence. He was capable, at least in a large portion of his life. He did not seem so capable in facing his own emotions, which she witnessed as she stalked him for Valentina, but neither was she really. There was also an easy way about their banter. He rose to the challenge instead of getting pissed off like the few other men she’d tried talking to over the years. John had an ego, yeah, but he also was practically begging for companionship and approval from those around him. Ava didn’t mind that—at least it was something consistent. And there was vulnerability there too—during their conversations in the desert, in the box truck, even after, before the Void wrecked havoc over the city. The soft broken parts behind his brilliantly blue eyes shined brightly, and they (sometimes) seemed to burn a bit more brightly when they were sparring with words.

He pulled his hand away from his hair again, this time covered in blood. “Shit, Walker,” Ava gasped, hands gripping the edge of the seat, keeping her in place otherwise she was sure she would have bolted across the short expanse between them. “You’re going to bleed out all over this loud man’s source of income.” “Oh, I’m sure this isn’t the worst thing that’s had to be cleaned out of this limo,” John said offhandedly. Ava tried not to smile but failed. John felt pretty pleased with himself for the almost.

Gulped down a wince at the fiery pain. “Don’t think I’m bleeding out anymore.” “Good.” She took a few steps past him toward the others. Alexei was currently explaining his woes about losing his limo and how if they had it, they could take it back to New York. “Mel said that Val was going to present Sentry to the press tomorrow morning,” Bucky was explaining. “That doesn’t leave us a lot of time,” Yelena cautioned. “Val works fast,” John said, walking up with Ava. “I didn’t have a second to breathe after getting discharged before she was on me.” “Like a god damn vulture,” Ava said, crossing her arms.
