Lucille knew the City was going bonkers with the consecutive days of blistering heat. With her air conditioning sometimes working and sometimes not, she’d been a bit frustrated herself, which was what had her spending the vast majority of her days at the cafe. Going against her self-imposed policy, she’d brought in her bunny, Velvet that morning, leaving him caged under her office desk to stay cool and far away from any food prep.
After finishing up with an Excel spreadsheet where she worked on the employees’ schedule for the next two weeks, she headed out to the front of the shop, keeping herself present for both the staff and customers alike. She’d given one of her clerks a friendly reminder to take their break with assurance that she would cover for them, and then turned around to wash her hands. When she turned back around, she saw a familiar face enter the cafe. Unable to help it, Lucy smiled and gently waved ‘hello’. “Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Welcome in!”
The last thing that Luis had expected was for the AC in his building to go out.
The morgue was still cool - thankfully it’s cooling systems seemed to be fine while they were working overtime (because he didn’t want to imagine what would happen if THOSE went out). However, while he could easily hang out in there, the dogs couldn’t. With how sterile the room needed to be, he didn’t feel like deep cleaning the morgue when the heat had already zapped his energy.
So instead, he bought a lot of ice and filled up a kiddie pool with it on the sidewalk, and let the three lay down in it. Blackberry fell asleep, Phantom whined, while Midnight had her body in the ice and her head resting in Luis’ lap. He hadn’t actually planned on talking to anyone, but as someone approached on the sidewalk, he sighed. “AC went out, if you have an appointment, you’ll want to call to reschedule,” he said, “If you live here, we’re still waiting on the repair guy.”
There’s nothing quite like summer in the city. Unfortunately, residents of the 5 boroughs are going to have some excess heat to look forward to, or dread soon. Although a heatwave is defined as 3 or more consecutive days at a minimum of 90 degrees (F), locals will have to endure over a week of triple digit weather. Some neighborhoods are at risk for temporary blackouts. Yikes!
This is a plot drop that will affect everyone in the RP. Although the heatwave will occur for 1 week RP time, members will have the entire month of July and a little bit of August to flesh out threads and interact with one another around this plot. For reference, the week+ heatwave will be July 11-20th but posts/threads can begin ahead of or after those dates.
Dive right into this plot and opportunities to chat up ideas with fellow members! I’ll include some questions & ideas to consider brainstorming on below the cut. Be sure to tag any starters or original posts relating to this plot drop: giaplot & giaheatwave! Again, everyone has the entire month of July, up through August 14th to enjoy this plot!
Food for thought:
How does your character normally deal with hot days? Do they pull out all their tank tops, shorts and sandals? Do they try to live in a swimming pool until they prune? Are Mr. Softee & Jamba Juice their new best friends?
Do they enjoy this or do they hate the heat? Will they be relishing in this summertime occurrence or will they likely be complaining the whole time? Are they dramatic? Are they the type to suffer in silence?
Would your character potentially live in a neighborhood that’s at risk for a blackout? If they experience the blackout, how are they going to stay cool during the days? Has your character made friends with anyone that might be able to help keep them cool (a home with A/C, a pool, etc.)?
If your character’s a business owner, how might this effect their business? Will they do well with slower foot traffic, having fewer people going out and about to avoid the heat? Could their business be in a neighborhood that loses power? Are they prepared with a generator if they lose power? Will any of their product be effected by a loss of customers &/or a loss or power?
How likely is your character to try and make the best of a generally unfavorable situation like this? In what way might they do that?
